What's the going rate for a babysitter

gimmegimmegimmeagin · 17/02/2024 22:08

^ just this . I have no idea as parents usually help out but going on holiday and we're going to a friends wedding reception. The kids will be in bed and very unlikely to wake up so it'll just be a case of being here. Babysitter is 16 and a friend of the family. Probably 7- midnight. How much should I pay her?

Conkerqueen · 17/02/2024 22:09

50 quid?

HelpMebeok · 17/02/2024 22:10

My dd (19) gets £10 an hour. Drives herself there and back

BarbaricPeach · 17/02/2024 22:27

We pay £12 an hour for one of the ladies from LO's nursery (so she's DBS checked, first aid trained and very good with little ones).

So I'd say probably about £8-10 an hour for a teenager.

My son gets £10/hour, not a chance would he or any of the other teens we know, do it for £5/hour!

Darkenergy · 17/02/2024 22:40

£10 per hour + cab fare home.
£5-7 is a bit disrespectful imo sorry, I was paid that in 2001!

That’s what they all get round here. It’s the going rate. They wouldn’t get any work if they charged £10. I can get a fully qualified DBS checked nursery worker for £10 an hour. No one is going to pay that for a teenager

2024theplot · 17/02/2024 22:57

15 years ago my friends and I charged £8 an hour, plus travel costs if the parents weren't driving us home. I'm shocked anyone would babysit for less than £10 an hour these days.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/02/2024 23:00

People never used to have to pay the living wage for 24 year olds to an unqualified teenager.

Perhaps you live in a poorer area then. My son works at primary school after school club (he's in the sixth form) and gets lots of babysitting work as do the other students who work there. He's been out tonight and earns £40 and has a job most weekends.

KateyCuckoo · 17/02/2024 23:04

@Gymmum82 and going by the other responses on the thread he's not alone!

Like fuck would you get an adult, dbs checked nursery worker doing babysitting for 10 quid an hour until midnight.
Op I’d pay £10 per hour for a 16yo, more if there’s more than one child. I’d leave snacks and possibly takeaway money too

Lady up thread pays £12 an hour for a nursery worker. So yeah you can, must depend where you live.

Here is an ad that came through our door recently advertising babysitting

What's the going rate for a babysitter
DoorPath · 18/02/2024 07:16

Sitters.co.uk babysitters charge £11.25-£11.50 per hour, and they are DBS checked, almost always nursery workers or TAs with a range of first aid and other qualifications. They always obviously make their own way here and home afterwards.

So I would have imagined a local teenager would/should cost less than this, or else what's the point, you would just use the vetted, professional service?

Dotdashdottinghell · 18/02/2024 09:08

Crikey I've never had to use a paid babysitter (I appreciate how lucky that is), but adding £60 / £70 to a budget for a night out just makes it untenable for most people surely? I am so out of touch, I used to get £7 for an evenings babysitting 😂

CanaryCanary · 18/02/2024 09:11

Totally depends on the area. We’re in an affluent southern city and they all charge minimum £14 an hour here, we currently pay £15. Plus if they don’t have transport we’ll pay for a taxi home after 10pm.

I'm in an affluent southern city too. Try sitters.co.uk, there's no way the rate is £14 per hour.

caringcarer · 18/02/2024 12:17

I think £9 an hour up to midnight and either drive them home if not been drinking or pay taxi fare home.

CanaryCanary · 18/02/2024 13:33

@DoorPath thank you I’ll take a look

gimmegimmegimmeagin · 18/02/2024 16:37

@Dotdashdottinghell exactly! I'm not used to having to pay! We are in a quiet town in Scotland so the affluent southern England rates are amazing me! I was thinking £30 a pizza delivered and I'd run her home!!

craigth162 · 18/02/2024 16:44

I pay £15 an hr in central scotland. But i pay more than average as ds has disabilities/additional needs so i need people comfortable with that who have epilepsy training.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 18/02/2024 16:48

The teens around here charge £12 -£15 an hour. The sitter sets the rate not the parents hiring them. Have you asked what their rate is?

I’m also up north and this is what I would sit for 5-10 years ago as a student

I think it needs to be at least £40 for 5 hours

HavfrueDenizKisi · 18/02/2024 16:54

16 yr old DD charges £7/hr. Some families round up or give her a little on top if they're far past midnight return.
