It's like that advert on the tubes so I think I could be a really good secretary!

ZebraPensAreLife · 17/02/2024 17:03

I can read most of it (some bits more easily than others) but not sure what the last word is meant to be?

Deadringer · 17/02/2024 17:04

Yes but it makes me very uncomfortable

Laiste · 17/02/2024 17:17

Yeah - but i scan read. In fact once i started i barely noticed the mistakes.

countdowntonap · 17/02/2024 17:22

Agree with @Laiste as I also scan read. I could read it aloud fluently. In fact, the most jarring thing was the missing full stop and the structure of the penultimate sentence rather than the spelling of words.

NotFastButFurious · 17/02/2024 17:23

Yes

Me too

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 17/02/2024 17:25

Yes, fluently, with no issues.

Apparently, if the number of letters in a word is correct, and the first and last letters are in the right places, the brain fills in the rest so you understand it from the overall shape of the word on the page. Obviously not the case for people with dyslexia or other processing issues, but in general, it works for the majority.

Yes it's true.

It's funny when you read something and then only afterwards realise some of the letters were replaced with numbers. Your brain just does the gymnastics for you.

LauderSyme · 17/02/2024 17:35

Yes I can read it fairly easily.

Our brains are wired to ignore errors and see what we think should be there, based on our knowledge and experience of language, rather than what is actually there.

2dogsandabudgie · 17/02/2024 17:44

Yes I can but not sure what the point of it is.

I've never found that sort of reading difficult, in fact if you hadn't said "can you read this" I don't think I'd have noticed the spelling until halfway through. I'm not very good at spelling though.

I used one of those on someone who tried to seriously tell me that all adults read using phonics, but were just so quick they didn't realise they were decoding each word.
They were being terribly superior so it then put them in a dilemma of did they say they couldn't read it, because that disproved what they said about phonics, but they clearly didn't want to admit they couldn't do something others could. They flounced after saying that spelling mattered.

shoppingshamed · 17/02/2024 19:19

Its well known that you can read things easily even if there are letters in the wrong order, spelling mistakes etc as youe brain just turns it into the right words

Obviously that's not the full scientific explanation, in sure it's easy to find that via Google

No we're not.

This is an exercise in communication at its finest. It goes to show just how well our brains work in deciphering something that only loosely resembles the language we know and love.

Phonics was invented by a Frenchman, and also heavily used by Montessori. It might work in French and Italian, but I don't believe it works all that well with the English language, especially when you take regional accents and variations in pronunciation into account.

It was around long before the internet, I remember reading that kind of thing as a child
