I have an idea of what these blood results mean, but can any one come and chat to me about them? Thanks.

WCC very low
HB very low
Neutrophils neutropaenic, not severely but within neutropaenic range.

No infection symptoms, has been well but recovering from heart surgery about 7 weeks ago. Was discharged with a low HB(FFS)

Dizzy episode, blacked out hence bloods were taken.
Not on any drugs that could influence these bloods but is on an anticoagulant (AF). Not Warfarin.

So given that there is no active infection, no other symptoms except loss of appetite, dizzy spells, low blood pressure (they are adamant that antihypertensives are continued) but possibly chronic inflammation from ?? Heart failure…
could this be anything other than a blood cancer?

Hi Op do you have the actual results you say HB very low what does that mean? It is not uncommon to discharge patients with a low HB but how low?
Why are you thinking about blood cancer? After surgery the body responds to trauma so blood results are often not within usual limits.

Also what is the blood pressure? Sometimes with heart issues (don't know your diagnosis) Drs are happy with lower BP to reduce extra strain on the heart. Again that is Dr specific. If the person is feeling unwell though and has a low BP and HB it may need reviewing. Were iron levels tested?

Could just be you are still recovering from surgery.
Would be helpful if posted actual numbers as for example NHS flags neutrophils as low if under 2 but infant only neutropenic if under 0.75

So BP systolic less than 100 with postural hypertension and frequent dizzy spells.
HB on discharge was 100 with clinicians having zero interest or checking of iron/ferritin/Tsats.
Expected to attend cardiac rehab when fatigued and breathless, FFS.
They haven’t said anything about actually blood readings but have stated “extremely unwell indeed with neutropaenic”.
Revers barrier nursed in a side room. (After nearly 50 hours in a crowded A&E waiting room with people vomiting/coughing/rolling around the floor in urine and shit, blood, urine, vomit and unknown substances all over the toilets in A&E…)

@Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon :
Expected to attend cardiac rehab when fatigued and breathless, FFS.

Well, that’s the point. If your heart were working well, you wouldn’t need cardio rehab.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 17/02/2024 11:21

Post cardiac surgery. Surely blood should be optimised prior to discharge to give people a fighting chance.

You need to say if male or female as the Hb range is different.

Do you have any baseline results (ie before surgery)

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 17/02/2024 12:52

Female
No blood results shared pre surgery. Discharge bloods were on the GP discharge letter.

It’s quite reassuring that you say it could be down to post surgery trauma response.

So HB is low but not needing blood transfusion low. Cardiac rehab will be difficult, but they will pace it for your relative. It will help. Your relative will need to rest and exercise as able. It will be a slow process.
Ask GP for advice regarding blood results. Hope your relative is eating a good diet to support themselves m

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 17/02/2024 17:14

Thanks cats.
No, not transfusion worthy to correct.

Oral vits, minerals and iron but pretty much waste of time due to heart failure.
Is a very active individual, has deep cleaned 2 rooms since operation. Walked to the shop and back every day, having to slow down a bit due to breathlessness.
Independently living doing all own housework, cooking etc, no outside help at all.

I interpret your post as looking to fill the anxious waiting time with looking for hope it could possibly be not related to cancer:
Rare but possible - amiodarone induced pancytopaenia. Amiodarone is like smarties after cardiac surgery. Even if it isn't part of the current medication list, there is a good chance she has had some.
Hope you end up with good news x

TraitorsGate · 17/02/2024 18:34

Who is this person, a relative, a patient, you, where are you getting this info from, how old

BoulderOpal · 17/02/2024 18:38

No idea in general but to reassure re HB, mine was 43 so although 100 is low it isn’t scarily so.

I hope all goes well for you.
