Why did I react so weirdly to having a drink last night?

3 G&Ts (two singles, one double), two cocktails which were rum based. All over the course of 5/6 hours, with a really large meal at the end. I had two glasses of water in the middle of the drinking and had a pint of water when I got home.

Wow, do I feel rough today! I didn’t feel anything more than tipsy last night and I don’t usually get hangovers, in fact never had a proper one even after I’ve done a bottle of wine and some to myself. I used to drink a lot more than I do these days but even then would say I probably have one or two drinks most weekends.

I kept waking up in the night too probably every hour or more feeling extremely dizzy and off kilter.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? BTW, not on any meds or anything like that.

How old are you? I found when I got to mid thirties I couldn't handle a full week at work, a late night, rich food and alcohol all in one. I was ruined the following morning.

What were the cocktails? They could've easily had 75-100ml of spirits in them. You've mixed different alcohol types too

i’d feel like shit after drinking all that.

Maybe you are just getting older.

bossybloss · 17/02/2024 07:57

Yeah, I came on to say that as I got older I was affected by alcohol differently!

Firstnews24 · 17/02/2024 07:57

do you usually drink?
i drink less than half a dozen times a year and that amount would knock me sideways. for about 48 hours!

whereas my sister is a more robust drinker, and would feel ok the next day

Hangovers vary depending on a lot of factors going on in your body. Hormones and hydration levels (electrolytes not just water) are two huge factors. Mixing drinks is never great either. And you did have 5 drinks!

Stillfalling · 17/02/2024 07:58

Maybe you are coming down with a virus.

Try eating something first up and eat during the drinks not only right at the end.

WimpoleHat · 17/02/2024 08:02

I’d say that’s a lot of alcohol for one night - and cocktails can be lethal. You could easily have four units per cocktail - so two of those, plus four units of gin, puts you at over a bottle of wine. Water and ibuprofen this morning!

Greensleevevssnotnose · 17/02/2024 08:04

A lot of alcohol, probably more than week's limit of 14 units in one evening. I would feel appalling too.

MrsSucculent · 17/02/2024 08:05

For me it’s more about the late night that kicks me up rather than the booze. Either that or you could be coming down with something.

Wrongsideofpennines · 17/02/2024 08:06

I had this a couple of times when I had drunk very little. I remember feeling very seasick and almost falling out of the shower because I was so off balance. Both times I'd had vodka mixer type things, I think it was VK or something similar and I think i reacted to one of the colourings or flavours in it. I've never had them since and never had that reaction again.

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/02/2024 08:06

The mix of different spirits won’t have helped

shootingstar1 · 17/02/2024 08:12

I honestly think gin is one of the worst hangovers 😢 whenever I drink gin the next day I'm ill.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 17/02/2024 08:12

I don't want to rain on your parade OP, I'm very old now but remember clearly that first hangover in my 20s. Its father time catching up I think.
Also alcohol is an actual toxin, a poison. So your system is letting you know so you can avoid it in future. It would be weird if you didn't react badly.

Shutupyoutart · 17/02/2024 09:04

Itl be the cocktails op! I love a cocktail or two (on the rare occasions I do go out now) and I will always feel crap the next day they are lethal cos they go down so easy and like someone else said they could have a few different units of alcohol In them, They are loaded with sugar too so could be a bit of a sugar hangover too. Lots of water, pain killers, a bacon sarnie and you will be right as rain 😁
