Has anyone else has this text from HSBC UK?

I've had it twice now, a fortnight ago which I ignored, and then again today.

"We have received a request to port your existing mortgage to a new property. If you're not aware of this request, then please contact us."

Nothing else in the text at all, and it doesn't address me by name. It won't bring up the phone number it has come from either. There's no link, no website, no phone number supplied for me to use to contact them. It appears that the only way I can respond is by replying to the text, which I don't want to do.

I don't have a mortgage, I own the house outright and have done for a number of years. Nor have I ever had any kind of account or other contact with HSBC. And I don't use my phone for online banking.

So I'm not sure whether to just delete the thing, or see if I can find a phone number for HSBC and ring them.

Has anyone else had a text like this?

clearly a scam

BoohooWoohoo · 16/02/2024 19:19

I haven’t. I have a current account with HSBC and a mortgage with another provider.

LordEmsworth · 16/02/2024 19:23

If there's no link and no contact number in the text, then they're pretty shit scammers.

Much more likely someone's given them the wrong phone number (or someone's messed up).

I really don't see why you can't delete the text and move on with your life. They can't port a mortgage you don't have so ignore, ignore, ignore.

If you really want to speak to them to put your mind at rest then there is something called "Google" which I highly recommend, I found this within about 2 seconds...

Have you signed up for the Gov alert on your property? I would advise this with no mortgage outstanding.

This isn’t AIBU. And even if it were, that would still have been an overly passive-aggressive response.

Patronising much?

Call them. There will be a phone number on the back of your card. If it's a scam then they'll be glad you told them about it.

So I'm not sure whether to just delete the thing, or see if I can find a phone number for HSBC and ring them.

"See if you can find a phone number"? You can find a phone number., I believe in your ability to do that even if you don't. Believe in yourself 💪💪💪

Rosecoffeecup · 16/02/2024 19:41

If it helps, I'm with HSBC and am looking to remortgage soon so whenever I log into the mortgage portal I get this message

Is that the same wording?

Nobody likes a smartarse.

In any case, my thread was asking whether anyone else had received a text like this one. I wasn't asking what I should do. I certainly don't need condescending remarks like yours, thanks very much.

What would the scam be? That someone might be tricked into thinking they have a mortgage they want to move when they don't?

Thank you, no, the text is as in my OP which I copied out word for word. Similar to yours, but not the same. I have now phoned HSBC, which I was planning to do anyway unless dozens of people had replied to my post and said they'd received the identical message. The chap I spoke to was actually quite concerned and did a bit of digging for me. He said they have absolutely no record whatever of my name or address on their system. He also advised that I should contact my actual bank with whom I had the original paid-off mortgage, and confirm with them that nobody has tried to obtain the deeds to the property, which they still have in their deed store. He also suggested that I delete the text message and ignore it completely as he was satisfied that from their end it is a scam.

I'm guessing that the scam would be that you reply to the text, saying you have no knowledge of it and you are worried that someone is trying to steal your identity/house. They then know you may be gullible, so phone you back and then ask for all sorts of personal security details which you happily give them, believing that they are who they say they are, and that they are trying to prevent someone else from scamming you.

I only really started the thread to see whether it was a well-known common scam, or a new take on an old idea. If it was well-known I would have just deleted it and not wasted my time in calling the bank.

Is it from HSBCUK (attached pic) or a random phone number?

Me neighbour was recently scammed out of a HUGE amount of money by someone purporting to be from HSBC. Block number and report it - there's a website where you can report a suspected bogus number.

It won't show me the phone number. Says it is from HSBC UK with a space. I've deleted the texts now anyway.

It's land registry you'll want, not your old mortgage company. You can register to check for changes on land reg for your property.

My old mortagage provider is where I have my bank account and savings, so I can easily contact them anyway.

Pleased about the info on the land reg alerts - very helpful. I'll do that for our house, and adult dc's home as well.
