Can apple juice CAUSE constipation

losthj · 16/02/2024 19:00

Lovely Friday evening chat.

my three year old. Colic baby. On laxido forever. Still huge issues with constipation.

without laxido can go days and days.

she takes it with apple juice. We are rural. I ran out. So she had water. I noticed she was pooping more. So I cut the laxido and the apple juice and she seems to be going constantly but much more normal like.

coukd it be that the apple juice has had the reverse effect?

is that possible.

Isn't laxido meant to be mixed with just water?
Apple juice isn't constipating though.

losthj · 16/02/2024 19:18

No can be with anything they will take.

just seems strange no apple juice and poo ok

Well I think apple juice is part of the BRAT diet for diarrhea, so I expect it could contribute to constipation

@GoodVibesHere ive found one article that says contrary to popular belief apple juice is not always a laxative. But it’s more a health blog than a medical one.

what you say is an excellent point. I think I might trial a week without it.

could almost be an intolerance to apples. Which she will hate as eats one a day minimum

My daughter is fructose intolerance that causes constipation. I am sure apples were fairly high in it.

losthj · 16/02/2024 19:35

Interesting thank you

Hi losthj

You have exactly described my daughter. She is 3 suffers from constipation, bloating and forever on laxido. She had colic when she was baby too.

I have seen this was only posted a few days ago. Have you had any update on what could be the cause?

Thank you 🙂

LBFseBrom · 20/02/2024 14:31

Prune, pear, and apple juices are natural laxatives and can help relieve constipation. Up to 4 ounces of juice may be given per day.

Apple is one fruit that does not exacerbate diarrhoea so anyone who has diarrhoea can drink the juice or eat the fruit with no problem. A sweet apple can help the problem to cease but doesn't cause constipation.

HAF1119 · 20/02/2024 14:34

Apples (not sure about the juice as he was never a fan) did cause mine constipation. Probably very variable depending on the child! Worth a try without!

losthj · 20/02/2024 15:48

@Paws93 nope. No change. Had a few days when I thought improving, now back to usual very constipated back on laxido.

Not sure what else I can cut out. Tried all the usual suspects.

Poor wee soul.

@losthj if it is fructose related it could be anything fruit flavoured, yoghurt, fruit squash, ice lollies, sweets, flavoured water.

losthj · 20/02/2024 16:20

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky ok. I can cut this out.

Anything worth a try. Looking at list, apples, pears, bread, broccoli all big favourites

Idk if this is helpful, and sorry if it’s been said before
i have IBS-C and Apples (and it’s juice) and a big NO food for me as it really exasperates my IBS-C, as well as beans / certain pulses
Wondering maybe it’s that as I struggled desperately as a child with it and didn’t find out I had IBS till I was much older 💐

yaychocolateginandwine · 20/02/2024 18:15

I think pectin is what sets marmalade ( so making something solid ) .. so maybe the pectin in apples can cause constipation ?

Paws93 · 20/02/2024 18:43

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky what alternatives are there for flavoured squash / lollies / yogurts. And a lot of vegetables are on the fructose list. Any meal ideas etc and did you manage to get an intolerance test via a GP? My GP has not offered any test or referral X

Paws93 · 20/02/2024 18:53

@PoliteTurtle thank you I'm trying to work out if it's IBS or an intolerance. She has very IBS symptoms. How did you get diagnosed with IBS-C and know it was these things. Just wondering where to get referred / or is this done privately?

@losthj thank you I hope we can both work it out. I know every child is different I am just trying to find out the cause so i can get her feeling more comfortable and potty trained as she is half potty trained due to this. If you have any update feel free to let me know.

VioletCoral23 · 20/02/2024 19:01

The laxcido does need to be mixed with water before adding to anything else like squash or apple juice. 63 mls of water for a paediatric sachet. If not mixed with water it doesn't work correctly. Eric is a brillant website with lots of information and advice. Here's the link about the medicine:

macrogol

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 20/02/2024 19:04

@Paws93 we just cut it all out. We are lucky in that it's more HFCS that she is intolerant to. Fructose in fruit doesn't affect her unless she eats a lot.

Just check the packets - some fruit flavoured stuff has glucose rather than fructose so fruit lollies for example we just swopped brand. She cut out squash and drank water.

losthj · 20/02/2024 21:02

@VioletCoral23 absolutely yes. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. Then I have to add the water.

@Paws93 your ahead of me. She won't go near it. Not a chance. I'm a relaxed toilet trainer anyway but there is no way at moment. She's either hiding under table or nothing.

I spoke to a GP, usually they ask you to make a food log and write down everything you eat, when you go to the loo and what it was like for a few weeks prior to diagnosis.
This was years ago for me and I haven’t had tons of help other than fibogel which is horrid orange stuff they give kiddies to drink as a laxative
And I was suggested prunes everyday.
the problem is when they ask you to eat more fibre, you can actually do more harm if you eat too much so a good balance and weeding out certain foods is your best bet.
They might have different advice now but definitely do ask a GP!
edit; For me, certain foods make my intestines spasm, slowing down how it passes… I also struggle with fizzy drinks, caffeine, sugar ect…

NewJeans · 21/02/2024 11:13

You can buy plain yogurt OP and drink herbal tea, just find one without any of your problem ingredients. You can make that into ice lollies too if you want.
