Doesn’t make much difference to us these days, but it really was breathing space when the mortgage used to hurt.

Just in case anyone had forgotten, this could give them a boost.

Thank you MN towers, more appropriate home for it, than the Royal Family section.😂

I’ve always chosen to spread ours across 12 months instead of 10 anyway, we get paid the same each month so easier to just budget a lower amount all year round

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/02/2024 17:18

Double PSA - it doesn't apply in all areas, as the payments could be spread out over 12. And nobody needs to find that out when the entire 2024/25 bill falls due immediately because you've missed two payments.

puddingthehump · 16/02/2024 17:33

Enjoy the 2 months off before the next year's bill rolls round.

I used to work in council tax so I know why it is 10 months and not 12 it is to enable us to collect in any outstanding monies for the financial year. But, most importantly, always pay this, ring them if you get into difficulty paying, and pay something if you can't pay all of it. Hands are very much tied as it is after all tax and they have some serious power to collect it, ie direct from your salary. We were all lovely and tried to help everyone. @NeverDropYourMooncup it is shit but it is all to do with reminders and final reminders and most people don't read the reminders where it will state the whole amount becomes payable.

Once the whole year is due and not paid then it goes to court (magistrates not county so no CCJ) only then will a council agree a payment arrangement because they then have a Liability Order which grants them the extra power for bailiffs or attachment of earnings. The attachment is fucking high percentage of your wage and you do not have a choice on that percentage. My advice, always contact them. I, all of us, would bend over backwards to help people within the limits we had.

2 months worth of council tax used to pay for our TV license back when we paid £65 a month. Those were the days.

It is 10 months unless you request 12 months also if you choose to pay weekly as somehow the government didn't take into account weekly payers. 20 years ago if you wanted a 12 month agreement it was on condition of an income and expenditure form, times have fortunately changed.

LlynTegid · 16/02/2024 17:36

Are there still councils that do this? Mine went to 12 payments a long time ago.

delilabell · 16/02/2024 17:44

Ours is still 10 months and it gives me a little bit of savings for summer holidays

Greensleevevssnotnose · 16/02/2024 17:45

We pay over 12 months but I guess some don't from your post

Augustus40 · 16/02/2024 17:45

Once ds got a job at 18 I lost my single discount and they took ages to sort it so this year we are paying over 12 months.

CeeJay81 · 16/02/2024 17:49

As previous poster said we keep it for the summer and it's money towards holiday/days out. Our water bill is simular, so it's nice to have that little bit of spare money when you are on a low income.

Having been through this, the pp is absolutely right! They put 2 attachments on me at the same time (they can do this) and I was left without enough to pay my rent and basic bills. Had they not agreed to a payment plan in the end, I would have had to give up my job and rely on benefits (although I know you can't claim immediately if you give up work) as at least then my rent would get paid!

I had done the classic thing of burying my head in the sand and not facing up to it and of course it just got worse. Lesson learned!
