Phone chargers and teenagers- help!

Does anyone have any hacks, tips or tricks on how to secure your phone / iPad / kindle charger and cables from thieving little blighters? I have two DC 10 and 13, am slowly going bankrupt buying new charger cables and still have no way to charge my phone. Shouting, begging, pleading, and bribing have all failed. I need a physical solution!!

Remove them all to your bedroom and hide them in a drawer or cupboard preferably with a lock.

Or have one of those Victorian Chatelaine style belts and carry them with you AT ALL TIMES.

I feel your pain. The best "solution" I've found is to use a wireless charger. It's recognisably mine and so far they haven't tried to swipe it.

I buy several at a time off amazon as they are so cheap on there

This is a behavioural problem, it won't be solved by securing your property. Discipline your children

cheap chargers cause fires

Stop leaving them lying around.

Get some of those phone charger sockets that have USB A and C (fast charge) ports on them.

Then get a USB C-C charging cable. Most of them are USB A-C so they won't steal them because they won't be able to charge.

Alternatively just bulk buy a shedload from Amazon.

TheIceQween · 16/02/2024 15:03

I swapped to a mag charger (magnetic to the back of the phone) the kids can’t use the phone whilst it’s charging on that so I find it gets left well alone!!

Give them a charger and tell them that if they lose them they have to replace them. Also tell them not to touch your property (and put your’s away!). This isn’t an issue about chargers -it’s an issue of how your DC behave and treat other peoples’ property.

Ouch! The problem is that they blame each other so without going full on Sweeney on them it's hard to punish them. I figured that if they couldn't steal mine, then losing theirs would have some nice natural consequences and they might learn to look after their stuff better.

I'm also not leaving them lying around. The little blighters will go and take them

Wireless charging is one of the few technologies that has "changed my life". So much so that we now have a charger in almost every room. And a double one to avoid squabbles.

Can't be bad for the environment - fewer cables with their plastic.

hedgehoglurker · 16/02/2024 15:48

Another option might be different colour cables for each person, so easily identified. Perhaps 3 (or 5) each to start everyone off.

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 16/02/2024 15:48

Are any particular brands safety tested to EU/UK standards on Amazon? I have a friend who had a house fire started by his son's (cheap not sure which brand) charger. I have used Syncwire which seem quite well made but I'm paranoid about fire hazards.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 16/02/2024 15:48

OOOH! Thanks I will look at this

I was fed up of being left with no charger so i

  • bought everyone a new one
  • Used different coloured nail varnish to write everyone's initial on the plug and a coloured band on the lead
  • issued everyone with new charger and told them if they lost it they had to replace from pocket money/wage

Haven't bought a new one since and its been almost 2 years

DorothyZ · 16/02/2024 16:10

No charging upstairs here so all the chargers juts stayed in the drawer in the kitchen.

TheNoonBell · 16/02/2024 16:17

Simple. Buy some long charging cables and tie up the kids with them. Problem solved😂

MissRainbowBrite · 16/02/2024 16:23

Amazon own brand cables can be bought in different colours so I'd buy each child their own colour and then get yourself a wireless charge base. Teens are known for not being able to leave their phone long enough to charge it off a base so definitely won't pinch one of those.

This.

It is about respecting other people's property, not specifically about chargers.

Colour coded ones! Sure you can get them from Amazon but I got mine from TK max- long Belkin ones - but also carve names into plug!
