Cheap days out in West Yorkshire

Looking for some inspiration!

My DH has worked 7 days a week for the past 18 months and me & dd (10) have got stuck in a bit of a rut of not going anywhere/doing much outside of our very local area on the weekends.

We used to do more as a family and I feel like she's missing out. I want to get into the habit of visiting some fun/new places just the two of us. I don't have a lot of spare cash but we are on a train line and have access to a car. I am autistic so can find new places tricky sometimes but If we can easily get there by train or car (and it's easy to park) then it's usually fine.

We live on the outskirts of Bradford. There's barely anywhere in West Yorkshire we have visited so just assume we haven't been anywhere!

Can anyone recommend some nice parks, walks, interesting places to visit or things to do which are good on a budget?

You could get her interested in the Brontes with abridged versions of Jane Eyre etc, and then go to Haworth and look round the Bronte parsonage and the town centre. Such a great preserved old house with their toys, handwritten books and clothes on display. There's a walk as well where you see a ruined farmhouse (that has a sign saying this is probably not wuthering heights! but it's still really atmospheric) and the little Bronte waterfalls where the sisters used to picnic. There are shops hood for kids spending pocket money and cafes too.

Thank you so much everyone for the ideas. So helpful!

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is great. Take a picnic. Saltaire and Howarth are both good days out. Malham Tarn, Aysegarth Falls and The Cow and Calf Rocks are good walks.

Haworth! One of my most favourite places in the world. I am a massive Bronte fan. A trip around Tge Parsonage is a must. The walks are lovely and the little gift shops are great to browse - and spend! - in.

Bit further but Townley Hall, Burnley

Sidebeforeself · 16/02/2024 14:10

Burnley isn’t in West Yorks though?

Nor it several other places on this thread, but all are reasonably manageable from most of West Yorks. @coxesorangepippin even started her reply with "a bit further".

Golden acre park is lovely
Yeadon tarn
Canon hall farm

Peabody25 · 16/02/2024 19:21

Bolton abbey
Brimham rocks
Armscliffe crags
Bingley st Ives
Wentworth castle gardens (South Yorkshire but a good day out!)
Roundhay park - two good playgrounds, plenty of routes to scoot/ cycle and a lovely cafe or picnic areas
Fulneck valley - park at the bankhouse pub in pudsey and walk down into the valley through the woods, up the other side to tong village and get an icecream from goodalls, a play on the playground and look at the animals, then back through the woods for a drink at the bankhouse.
Ponderosa - small farm/ zoo and playgrounds but we took two 10 year olds recently and it still kept them entertained for a few hours
Funzy - inflatable park in Bradford city centre but cheap compared to a lot of other ones and just been refurbished!
Standedge tunnel
Wakefield coal mining museum
Ilkley moors
Otley chevin
Further afield but valley gardens in Harrogate or Harlow carr

(a PP has beat me to it, but)
Greenhead Park in Huddersfield is really nice.

I spent most of my time in the region in bars and clubs - I wish I'd gone to other places more!

WhatInTheFuckery · 16/02/2024 19:28

Ponderosa
Bolton Abbey isn't too far is it if you're in Saltaire?
Hollingworth Lake is easy to get to by train (train to Smithy Bridge and a 5 min walk)
Eureka
The Piece Hall
Funzy (they do a toddler hour in the mornings too)

Time40 · 16/02/2024 19:39

I second Hebden Bridge; it's a lovely little town - and from there, you can walk to Hardcastle Crags, which is beautiful.

Huddersfield secondhand market (Tuesdays and Saturdays) is worth going to, if you're in Huddersfield anyway.

There are some enjoyable and interesting walks along the side of the river and canal from Mirfield - you can go in either direction from the railway station.

NannyR · 16/02/2024 19:39

Malham (north Yorkshire, I think? But very easily accessible from Bradford) The circular walk from the village, up to the top of the cove, past Gordale scar and Janet's Foss is ideal for kids - it's fairly easy but feels like a real adventure to children. The views are amazing and there are plenty of cafes for a post walk hot chocolate.

Glenthebattleostrich · 16/02/2024 19:40

Live opposite the sculpture park and agree, brilliant for a visit. As is Cannon Hall.

There's also Wentworth Woodhouse in Barnsley and Nostal Priory near Wakefield

Sidebeforeself · 16/02/2024 22:13

@BaroqueInterlude My thoughts exactly! I’ve had to have a lie down!

Fetaa · 16/02/2024 22:15

coxesorangepippin · 17/02/2024 17:00

Oh the audacity of crossing into Lancashire!!! I think Burnley is about two miles past the Yorkshire border - enter if you dare, op 🫡🫡🫡

The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield had loads of Half Term kids activity, so check weekends and Easter Hols.
