Help I broke a tooth!

I've broken one of the molars -second to back -no wisdom teeth.

It's the second time it's broken. The first time about 7 years ago. My then dentist said it could be filled and I think they somehow did it by building it up. It then developed minor crack horizontally. Not painful but could feel it with my tongue.

My new dentist said it had been heavily filled but the crack was fine and to leave it. My dentist is NHS and amazing.

I think I've lost some tooth (about half the tooth- it's a big break) and some filling. It not painful -just a bit sharp -And can't see it.

What does anyone think option might be? Filling or Crown? Can you crown a tooth that has not been root filled?

I had a filling on the outside of my wisdom tooth, then broke the inside Confused
They filled it and it came out, I've had it refilled with no issues fingers crossed----

It likely feels much worse to your tongue than it really is!! Ig the bulk of the filling is sound then it might be that it can be repaired, without the need for a total replacement. If not then you will likely need the entire filling replaced or you may want to discuss the option of a crown. You can certainly have a crown on a tooth that has not been root canal treated. in a molar tooth with a very large filling, with a history or cracks and chips, you may well find a crown has a better long term prognosis. Call your practice and book an assesment.

I never knew this was a thing-outside fillings.

It sounds similar to me so thank- hoping for a filling not a crown.

I've just finished and implant procedure that was gruelling

I’ve done similar recently (twice) and have needed crowns. They said the fillings were too big to try and replace them.

Thanks everyone feeling a little more informed now.

Quick update

He took one look and said oh wow. That needs a Crown.

All sorted now! Minus £450 but my dentist is awesome.
