Car Insurance-warning!!

We got an automatic car insurance renewal notification today. It was for nearly £1000 more than last year. A bit of googling - ( thank you Martin Lewis!)- and we got it down to even less than last year's! We might well have not noticed and paid the massive new bill. So be wary, everyone!!

Out of interest, did you get it down with the same provider or did you have to go with another insurer?

neilyoungismyhero · 14/02/2024 18:06

Direct Line gone up massively. I went with Churchill who were cheaper than last year's DL premium. My friend said Tesco were also good value.

Walkingwithdinosaurs · 14/02/2024 18:35

mine has also went up quite a bit. what’s the magic that Martin Lewis disclosed then?

CurlewKate · 14/02/2024 19:27

To answer questions .. no, it was a new provider.

Martin Lewis has a questionnaire that helps you get the best deal- for example-dp can describe his profession two ways. Both valid, but one cheaper than the other o e!

Me too! Just signed up with Churchill, cost £250 less than renewal quote.

Interesting.

I beat my imported camper van insurance down to just under last years amount with Adrian flux

couldn’t get a boring cmax insurance lower than 150 more though - Adrian flux did match it though.

I don’t work for them but I’d recommend Adrian flux as brokers for specialist insurance and they are worth talking to re standard car stuff. Thry actually understand what you tell them ( as opposed to admiral who quoted my for my imported camper then made me go through all the conversion bit by bit “ because we have it down as a car not a
camper van “ what ??)

susansaucepan · 14/02/2024 21:29

My car insurance never seems to go down in price . Despite driving for 14 years and never having claimed or been involved in an accident .

Can anyone tell me why ?

My parents seem to pay peanuts , literally couple hundred quid for the year.

What am I doing wrong ?

yip for me as well, i went with RAC and got basic breakdown cover thrown in and it was still cheaper than direct line was offering

sleepyscientist · 14/02/2024 21:32

@susansaucepan what do your drive and where do you park it? I find BMW/mini insurance cheapest for the mini, car being on the drive saves nearly £150.

MindHowYouGoes · 14/02/2024 21:33

Your renewal should have listed the premium you paid last year and included a reminder you might get the cover cheaper if you shop around - the warning of higher premiums is on the actual documents

I drive a Vauxhall , nothing rare or expensive to replace . Parked on our private driveway. only used for leisure and commute so not even business use and relatively low mileage as we have another more spacious car which we tend for long distance journeys .

What do you think ?

menopausalmare · 14/02/2024 22:24

I'm with Aviva and my automatic renewal quote was only £20 higher than last year.

sleepyscientist · 14/02/2024 22:24

@susansaucepan I used 1st central for my previous car they were cheaper than any comparison site quote and never really went up. Play around with your job tittle

susansaucepan · 14/02/2024 22:36

@sleepyscientist Thanks. I will try that this year.

I tend to go for the closest match on the occupation drop down.

Do you just select a few random roles and see which one comes out cheaper ?

Do they ever actually ask for proof of your occupation ever you need to make a claim ?

Cotswoldbee · 14/02/2024 22:40

TBH it has always been recommended never to just accept the renewal quote but instead to shop around.

Renewed our car insurance today.
With the AA, last year it was £160 but renewal came through last week at £277. Went on the comparison sites and saw an identical policy for £224 so rang the AA and they immediately price-matched without wanting any further proof other than the name of the insurer.

NewName24 · 14/02/2024 22:54

I'm more surprised to hear that anyone would think it a good idea to just pay the renewal without checking anyway.

That said, across the board, car insurance has gone up by a massive % this year.
If you've got one lower than last year, you are lucky.

99victoria · 14/02/2024 23:38

I've read a lot about car insurance increases recently. Mine is due for renewal in March so went on comparison websites yesterday and got a quote for £138 - less than I paid last year
