For me it's social media and sugar.

Ate so much crap today, actually quite looking forward to it.

Lol at lent seeming very inward

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/02/2024 23:00

nothing. Do people still do lent Confused

Meadowy · 13/02/2024 23:01

But giving up biscuits or whatever doesn’t make someone a better person, and it’s hardly a great test of endurance. I’ve always just found it rather childish. If you want to give something up and it to be hard + a bit of suffering why not give up hot water or wearing shoes or something?

JupiterSymphony · 13/02/2024 23:03

Blow Jobs and Salad.

Meadowy · 13/02/2024 23:03

Thetwirly - it’s totally inward looking, giving up cake or wine etc benefits absolutely no one except the person giving it up getting a health benefit + some sort of personal satisfaction at their virtuousness.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/02/2024 23:04

@CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan i might join you on the 40 days of mn abstinence. Shall we meet here on Easter Sunday?

Nothing, I’m not religious. I don’t understand the point of giving something up, it seems very inward looking to me. Much more useful to try to do something positive that will help others.

It's ok to do things to help ourselves to. I'm like many women in that I always put myself last, always helping everyone else. But, yeah, sometimes I think it's ok to look after myself.

blinkofaneye90 · 13/02/2024 23:10

Bread & chocolate. I am currently in the perfect mindset to bin off both. Haven't really had chocolate at all in last few weeks as dieting. Bread will be harder as I'm partial to a slice of toast when hungry. 40 days of lent. 1 Stone to go

Being so hard on myself.
Also will aim to be kind whenever any opportunity presents itself.
I am not a Christian, but have always felt that the people who do lent best look outwards rather than inwards. Eating bread or not = no positive impact. Making some bread or other food to share with those who need it = much more helpful.

But not eating eating bread can have a positive effect on ourselves. It's ok sometimes for us to look after ourselves too. But as well as looking after myself I'll be doing with my DD the Lent giving calendar they do at her school. You bring different items everyday to be donated to the homeless.

Meadowy · 13/02/2024 23:26

Summer - of course it’s fine to look after ourselves - but that’s nothing to do with lent!

Japanesejazz · 13/02/2024 23:36

Religion and cleaning

FatOaf · 13/02/2024 23:41

Crisps and chocolate. A bit of a cheat as I gave them up for new year and haven't relapsed yet.

StarDolphins · 13/02/2024 23:44

My DD (7) is giving up veg🙄 because evidently she eats it!

I’m giving up cheese and it’s going to be very difficult!

Sleepydoor · 13/02/2024 23:47

I disagree - Lent is a time for self reflection and a time for strengthening out spirituality. I find self care is an important part of that.

Jingleeaster · 14/02/2024 08:25

Going to sleep after midnight.

IClaudine · 14/02/2024 08:27

Arguing on MN! It is such a waste of time.

Me too! Well actually not using my phone in front of my kids, social media and sugar.

Good luck

I don't agree. Practising any form of self-discipline, where you pause before taking the quick fix option, and defer gratification, leads to long term benefits.
If we all ate less sugar and bread and drank less or no alcohol, we'd ease the burden on the NHS for starters. We'd be healthier role models for DC and fitter, more energetic parents and co-workers.

I agree. Although it's become a custom to give up sweet things, or meat, e.g pancake day, carnival, mardi gras, it's the self discipline which matters. If you know you have been pigging out food wise, then that's a good discipline. For others the discipline of using their time effectively instead of wasting it, or doing something for others instead of always for yourself, might be a more appropriate discipline.

I told my AC that I’m giving up childcare for lent!😆
Didn’t go down well.

SaltyGod · 14/02/2024 10:16

I was going to give up chocolate, but after reading this I’m going to add MN too.

This is my last post until Easter. I think this will be harder than chocolate and I hope will lead to more positive changes. This year I am feeling the religious pull more strongly, previously I was perhaps half-hearted with lent.
