Car insurance for newly qualified DS.

Afternoon, TIA for any help. My 17 yr old is (hopefully) due to pass his test in three months or so. I’ve found a 2006 Renault Clio 1.1 which I think is reasonably priced. Checked out a quote today, limiting him to 9,000 miles a year. It will be parked on the driveway. Cheapest quote was £3,700!
anyone have experience in this and able to share some tips?

Thanks

Last year when my DS passed the best I could get was £1700 with Wise Driving black box on a 1.4 10 year old mini, looking again now for renewal and they're coming out around £700 so a big drop with 1 year NCB under his belt.

I can highly recommend Wise Driving, they actually reduced his premium slightly after a few months of god driving

Definitely don't insure it in your name, that's illegal!! But do put you and your wife on as named drivers, insurers see that as the teen doing less of the driving so less risk of claim

I might avoid putting my wife on as a new driver she written off two cars in the last 12 months🤣

We've just insured DD with Tesco with a black box policy, capped at 6000 miles. £1800 for a 10 year old Fiesta. We were both named drivers. Even though I had a (small) crash last year, it still brought the policy price down to have both of us, I just have a larger excess. I'd only drive it in an emergency anyway so that's fine.

It's a necessary rite of passage to learn to drive but god only know how I'll afford this sort of insurance as a single parent :-(

Privilege was best for my dd. It was just over £900 without a black box on a 05 Toyota Yaris. That was 2 years ago though.

It’s extortionate isn’t it - we are on the cusp of organising this too.
It’s one expensive hurdle after another - you find an instructor, pay a fortune for lessons, mange to book & pass a test
So many apprenticeships require full driving license and vehicle as standard - seriously excluding a lot of young people

Tell me about it @idrinkandiknowthings .. DD passed a few months ago and it’s been a nightmare trying to find her a half decent car with insurance that I can actually afford 🙁

Automatics are much cheaper to insure because very few teenage boys drive automatics. Premiums are based on the number of accidents/claims made by teenage drivers in specific makes of car. Apparently Ford Fiestas are the most expensive.
Maybe look for a car that teenagers wouldn’t be seen dead in with auto transmission.
Newer cars are cheaper to insure because of the newer safety technology. DS drives a VW Polo automatic which has front assist so if he is slowing down too slowly is automatically breaks to avoid collision with car in front. This reduces the premiums.

Can I ask how much you’re paying for your DS’s insurance? DD has an automatic licence and even still we’re really struggling to find a reasonable quote.

Rather than focus on a Clio, look at less aesthetically pleasing ones like Fabia.

My dd passed yesterday. Admittedly she has inherited my Old Ford cmax which is 1.8 engine but it's cost her £298 a month and that's with a telematic box and limited to 8000m

Teddleshon · 14/02/2024 13:56

Yes as others have said, we got ours down to £1200 with a black box and dh and me also as named drivers but DS (18) as main driver. Car is a Fiesta. I haven’t really heard anyone getting away with anything less than £1200.

@tasteslikechicken his was trying to insure a 18 year old sports car! ( don't ask - it was not bought with my blessing!)

The £20k quote was clearly because of the ridiculous car and him being a brand new driver. We did laugh when the girl asked us if we wanted to go ahead! He is still driving that same sports car though and as I said the insurance was £2300 for the first year with a black box and is now £1500 without one for the second year after he waited a few months for the renewal quotes to come down from £4k.

At the time we thought about selling the sports car and getting a more sensible one but he was getting the same high quotes for fairly normal cars like fiestas and polos etc so we realised it wasn't actually the car that was the problem. His friend is paying the same for his 12 year old ford fiesta.
