Urine Test Results - MRSA?!

I'm not medically trained but have had a lot of UTIs
Yes Meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus is the bacteria identified in your urine after growing in the lab
There is blood and surface cells in your urine
MRSA is an uncommon source of bacteria and this may suggest acquired infection ( systemic means everywhere)
The antibiotics listed( not sure if you've tried them all but the R means resistance( won't clear infection) and the S means the bacteria is sensitive so should clear infection.. but in my experience may require a longer course
In my case I had a year long low dose of Cephalexin which did clear and after a cystoscopy, I never had another
Hopefully a medic will confirm or correct if I'm wrong in any way!

I’m a nurse. Yes, those test results are positive for MRSA. Have they prescribed antibiotics for you to pick up? MRSA shouldn’t be left for two weeks as it can turn nasty. I hope you’re not feeling too poorly ♥️

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply. Weirdly I feel ok. They did the urine test as I was poorly with flu like symptoms and a chest infection for 5 weeks. I work in a prison... v dirty. Maybe I picked it up there.

Anyone could be a carrier of MRSA thus you could have got it from anyone.

Namechange58 · 13/02/2024 17:28

Does anyone know what treatment i would need? I feel well in myself, aside from tired.

Have you already been prescribed the antibiotics on the sensitivities? Or do you have to wait two weeks to even have that conversation and get them?

Yes, you have an UTI caused by Staph Aureus - you need the Trimethoprim or Nitro to treat it.

If you’re not already taking one of those or have a prescription ready to collect, then you cannot wait two weeks to talk to GP and need to be very firm with the receptionist.

CaraMiaMonCher · 13/02/2024 17:33

You may well be a carrier of MRSA on your skin, etc - but to find it in the bladder/urine is unusual (as documented in the culture report).

The treatment you need is literally documented there - Nitrofurantoin or Trimethoprim.

Thank you, no, I have not been prescribed anything at all. I only know the results as I logged into my GP's online system. They haven't even called me. On top of the results it just says Abnormal, arrange gp appt within 2 weeks. I will try and call them tomorrow.

OP within 2 weeks means ideally less than 2 weeks but not longer. In your opening post you say they are making you wait 2 weeks. Is that what's happening? Because if it is I'd point it out to them, I think you need to see a GP ASAP (I'm not medical but MRSA, strewth). Hope you get it sorted.

Southwest17 · 13/02/2024 18:29

You don’t need to see a GP for a UTI these days as pharmacies will and can prescribe for this if you’re over 16 and under 64 - something I learnt yesterday. The GP can either write a prescription out without seeing you or the pharmacy can do the same - I hope you get it sorted

MRSA often starts as a skin infection causing redness, pain and swelling. It can also spread to other areas like the lungs, bones and urinary tract.

Namechange58 · 13/02/2024 21:58

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I've emailed the gp reception this evening to ask for next steps advice. Apologies, to clarify I've not heard from the gp at all, I viewed the results online and it said 'Abnormal- to be seen within 2 weeks'

Just in case this is useful for anyone in the future. I received a letter and call from the GP. I have been prescribed antibiotics for 3 days and have to take another urine sample in two weeks. They are more concerned with the blood in the urine. I still feel ok in myself. Just a massive headache - but I do suffer from the odd migraine and haven't been sleeping great.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/02/2024 12:22

Personally I don't think 3 days is long enough, but I know that is nice guidelines now
I do hope you feel better soon

dingledangledinkledoo · 16/02/2024 12:57

MRSA is not unusual, I have a constant MRSA infection in my sinuses and I live quite normally but with frequent antibiotics to prevent a flare up turning into pneumonia
