Any other ‘light sleepers’?? So fed up!

I’ve never been a good sleeper, I take a long time to drop off to sleep and often wake through the night, I’m also a very light sleeper so any noise wakes me up or keeps me awake.

My DD has recently started sleeping in her own bed, after 5 years of waking through the night and coming into bed with me. I should finally be able to get a bit better quality sleep, but now my partner is keeping me awake with his heavy breathing. It’s driving me mad!

We’ve been together almost 3 years, until about 6 months ago he was pretty much silent when sleeping, but now he breathes heavy and occasionally does a light snore - it’s no where near as bad as some peoples snoring and in all honesty he’s still fairly quiet, the problem is me- why can’t I sleep through the gentlest of noises?!

it’s causing us to argue because I’m so tired from lack of sleep and inevitably end up taking it out on him.

We have 2 bedrooms that are available, ours and my daughters, he sometimes sleeps in my daughters room but she often snores even louder than he does so that doesn’t solve the problem with me not being able to sleep.

I try the usual good sleep hygiene, which occasionally helps with me getting to sleep easier but I’m then woken by his heavy breathing and struggle to get back to sleep.

Does anyone have any advice? Anyone else in the same boat? Do you eventually get used to the noise?

Ear plugs.

Have you a decent couch? I get up out of my lovely comfy bed at the very first snore nowadays because it enrages me so much if i lie there kicking him only for him to stop and start the bloody snoring. So I'm on the couch about 5 nights a week. It's crap.

Definitely ear plugs!

Wax earplugs. It's literally the only way I get sleep

PrincessOfPreschool · 13/02/2024 21:23

Ear plugs, separate rooms, exercise. I do usually sleep well if I've had a long walk.

SherylCrow · 13/02/2024 21:26

White noise, a fan, rain sounds on Alexa? I breathe in my sleep, shocking, and my partner finds it annoying. Ear plugs, or I sometimes tape my mouth shut. I have recorded myself and it's not loud, my partner is just extremely sensitive to sound. At least it'll be obvious when I'm dead.

Wax earplugs and a weighted blanket. I’ve been borrowing DD’s kids weighted blanket and it’s on 3 kg but it’s lovely to sleep under and I absolutely sleep better after a night shift when I use it.

Piscesmumma1978 · 13/02/2024 21:38

Same. Since having children I’m a very light sleeper and seem to wake a lot at night. Dh snores very loudly. He also gets up very early some days for work.

We moved to separate rooms a year ago and it’s the best thing we’ve done. I just can’t try to sleep with any noise now!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/02/2024 21:46

I sometimes drift off to something I've watched loads on Youtube. It's like white noise I suppose. Dh snores & it helps block that out.

Me too 😞 It gives me the rage that he's lying there enjoying a lovely sleep whilst I'm kept awake. If I nudge him he then gets arsey with me. He doesn't even notice I've gone.

I've tried both foam and wax earplugs without success. I keep getting FB adverts for the "Loop" ones. Has anyone tried them? Any good?

shandee · 13/02/2024 22:59

My husband gets arsey too and claims he couldn't possibly be snoring because he's awake. Randomly and coincidentally awake at 2am at the same time as me.. yeah right.

Ive tried wax earplugs and thought they were absolutely gross and a bit unsettling.

Twentyoddyears · 13/02/2024 23:07

Earplugs never work for me. White noise is the only thing that helps me drift off and keeps me asleep. It does take a few nights to get used to, but I can't sleep without it now.

Dh is allowed back in the bed too. Better sleep all round for everyone.

ThatSharpCrow · 13/02/2024 23:10

Me.

All my kids are older and sleep in weekends, as does DH.

But anyone in the street getting in their car, anyone going to the loo, the cat coming in the room etc all wake me up.
I can never get back to sleep.

DH can sleep through a hurricane. Then get up, let the dogs out, get a drink of water and go straight back to sleep.

It's like a super power! Just how??

Valleygirl2023 · 14/02/2024 13:33

I see that I’m far from alone with this issue!

I hate the feeling of wearing ear plugs, but I’ll give them a go again. DP tried nose strips last night which helped a bit.

I really envy people who can sleep anywhere and through any noise, what a luxury it must be to have regular good nights sleep.

These were recommended to me. Not tried yet. I have v small ears so apparently can divide in half.

Yep white nosie is what you need! I can’t sleep without it now. Also should add my husband and I sleep in separate rooms (he actually bought a fold out bed for downstairs as no spare room) and it’s so much better as he is a snorer too.

Funkyslippers · 14/02/2024 20:14

Silicone ear plugs from Savers are a life saver. Also Rescue Remedy Night capsules. Fresh air & exercise during the day
