Can you help me identify this village in the Yorkshire Dales

About 40 years ago, when I was about 12, I went on holidays with my friend and her parents to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. We drove around a lot but one memory I have is driving into a tiny village in the Dales, and feeling like we might not be able to get out as the road was so narrow - I think it was a bridge. I think the village was very self-contained, not sure how to describe it but like entering a farm, not with houses on the road into it. I have a feeling we came down to it from a hill and could see it. But not sure.
And that’s about all I can remember. I’d love to find it again as it stuck in my head. We may have been travelling to Haworth from the Lake District but taken a scenic route. But that may be a red herring.
Any suggestions for me - it’s vague I know!

That could be a number of places. Bolton abbey has a very narrow archway.

Clapham?

AtomicBlondeRose · 13/02/2024 09:15

Muker has a bridge on the way into/out of the village.

Bentham? Dent?

Preston under Scar?

Arncliffe has two narrow bridges and is "self contained" as you say at the bottom of a valley.

This fits the description and location.

Thanks for the replies. Had a look at them all. Some are too big, some too linear - it wasn’t a village with a road going straight through it. Muker and Arncliffe are most like what I recall. It felt enclosed, tiny, narrow roads. Of course that’s my 12 year old perception of it, so maybe it’s wrong. Thanks though, beautiful villages.

Hawes?

Bealtaine23 · 14/02/2024 09:48

Hawes and Gayle beside it feel like a good fit in terms of the narrow lanes etc. aw, it’s impossible to be sure given the time passed/my memory - I think I’ll just have to visit again! Thanks all.

Could it have been in the Lakes? Sounds like Watendlath.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/02/2024 09:50

Muka?

I agree this is a possibility.

CormorantStrikesBack · 14/02/2024 10:32

Watendlath has the narrow dead end road and a very narrow bridge to get to it. It’s like driving into a farmyard when you get there.

helpfulperson · 14/02/2024 11:41

Interestingly the Google maps street view doesn't go right to the village, presumably because of the narrow road. It does sound like it might be the right place.

Bealtaine23 · 14/02/2024 11:51

Not Watendlath, but I suppose it could be Lake District area too - but looks like the Dales type village. At this point the more I try to recall it, the woolier it’s getting 😩but thanks for all the suggestions. There are some amazing places there!

Somewhere round Denby Dale or Hebden Bridge?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/02/2024 12:23

Do you have a parent or sibling who might remember?

MillshakePickle · 14/02/2024 12:26

Hebden Bridge came to my mind instantly

WinkyTinky · 14/02/2024 12:31

Coming into Bainbridge you approach down a bit of a bendy hill then over a bridge next to a water screw and into the village. This is between Aysgarth and Hawes. I flippen love the dales.

TheTecknician · 14/02/2024 12:33

It sounds like Hubberholme, near the head of Wharfedale.

BellaVita · 14/02/2024 12:38

Sounds to me like Summer Bridge. My grandparents lived there many years ago.

girlmeetsboy · 14/02/2024 12:47

Pateley Bridge?

Moier · 14/02/2024 12:52

Kirkby londsdale..( sister lives there)
Tiny square with an arch centre some cobbled streets.
Think Skipton be too big.
Could be Grassington.
Sounds a lot like Settle too.
We are going to Kirkby Londsdale on Sunday.. we go via Skipton and Settle .. through Ingleton.
I'll keep my eye out for your description.
