Do I need a UK passport - I have an Irish one

I always thought I couldn't have a UK passport, I called the helpline circa 15 years ago for info and was told I couldn't. (I was going to switch because my Irish one had been stole and I had previously lost one so I was being penalised by the passport office Ireland)

I looked it up again and I am fairly certain I can. I was born in England to Irish parents in the late 80s. I lived there for about 8 years in total but my mam got me an Irish passport.

Do you think you'd get one now just to have the two? I can't really see any benefit to it? I was thinking for my children it might be helpful but they have my UK Birth cert if they ever wanted to apply themselves. Also the common travel area doesn't seem to be changing.

I live in Ireland and only visit the UK every few years. All my UK cousins have been getting Irish passports lately!

Do you have British citizenship?

No benefit at all in getting a UK passport. Your Irsh passport gives you the right to freely travel and live in the UK and the EU.

I'd say the Irish passport is superior, no need for a UK one!

Do you have British citizenship?

I've never applied for it. I think it looks like I've actually been a citizen since birth:

""Born in the UK between 1 January 1983 and 1 October 2000""

If at least one of your parents was a British or Irish citizen when you were born You’ll be a British citizen if when you were born at least one of your parents was either:

  • a British citizen
  • an Irish citizen living in the UK

If the parent that meets these conditions is your father, he must have been married to your mother when you were born.

That's the part applicable to me from the below website. Born late 80s to Irish citizens living in the UK. Parents weren't married so I'd qualify on my mother.

Check if you're a British citizen

Check if you're automatically a British citizen - it depends on where and when you were born and your parents' immigration status.

@Notalldogs23 @Hoplolly Ya just another expense! Travel between Ireland/ UK is so easy no point. Be different if I'd been born somewhere a bit more far flung!
