Which watch to help a 4 year old start to learn clocks and times?

My 4y2m old is keen on time and clocks etc and I think she'd like a watch and/or clock.
Is there any point getting those ones that "help"?? The kind in the photo.

She knows her numbers perfectly up to at least 20.

Or should we not bother because she's too young?

I definitely had a proper watch at that age so I don't see why not.

There’s a lot going on on that watch face. I’d get a simpler one - getting used to the numbers denoting hours and minutes is enough at that age!

But do you think we should bother with the instructions one? Or just go for a normal one?

I agree go for a simpler one. If she’s showing interest get her one. You get very simple cheap ones.

I wouldn't bother. Just get a clock with very clear hands and numbers and hang in the kitchen. If the whole family use it then he will too.

I wouldn’t bother with a watch at that age. I have this clock for DD and it’s really helping.

I wouldn’t use a watch at all, I would get a toy clock with interlinked hands that you can move to show the rotation of both at different speeds. You could then use it as a game, she says a time, you set the clock, are you right or wrong? Then when she gets more confident you say a time and she sets the hands. You can’t do that with a watch.

Start with o ‘ clocks.

Then half past.

Then quarter to and quarter past, but you will need to explain what that means, she probably knows about halves.

That’s a very clear clock face @IDoLikeToBeByTheSea , the only thing I would question is that there isn’t much difference in length between the hands, they seem to be different widths for some reason, which I find a bit confusing, I expect they are trying to reinforce the idea of using the correct language that one is the hour and one the minute hand , but I think on most clocks this is indicated by length, not width so might cause confusion when looking at different clock faces.

I agree, the picture makes it seem like they are the same length which is deceiving. But on the actual clock, the minute hand extends to the outer edge of the numbers and the hour hand to the inside of the numbers. Which helps it be a bit clearer

I remember my first watch at about that age, it was a Timex with a beautiful red strap, I loved it! It had a very clear dial with a white back ground and black numbers and hands. I loved that I could tell the time with it and wore it everyday.

What about something like this? www.loruswatches.com/Watch/RRX01GX9

wubwubwub · 12/02/2024 18:24

Ok, how about this?

Then I could introduce the 10 past etc with the small outer numbers later??

My 4yo has a swatch and the flikflak app and can tell the time from an analogue clock more quickly than I can sometimes Blush

SnowsFalling · 12/02/2024 18:31

And we had a watch similar to this argos one

wubwubwub · 12/02/2024 18:34

Cool, I'll have a look. Might look for a waterproof one whilst I'm at it.

Not opposed to having a clock and a watch :)

I think a watch and a clock is a good idea, you can’t easily turn the hands on a watch, well you can, but they are not designed for a whole lot of turning so would probably break quite quickly , so a teaching clock where you can turn the hands and see how they move and relate to each other is something to think about. It’s quite nice to get timers as well so they begin to appreciate what “a minute” or “ two minutes” is. You can get egg timers that time different lengths of time.

Flik Flak are fab and machine washable! They also do free battery replacement in store

Cool. Will look them up.
