BREAKFAST CLUB PROVIDER (Fiesta Sports Club) TERMINATES BREAKFAST CLUB WITH ONE WEEK NOTICE

We live in a village & until last September had no wrap-around provision at the village school.

Fiesta Sports were then bought in to provider breakfast club and after school club. They promised the provision for 2 years.

Subsequently I accepted a temporary role at work which meant relying on breakfast club 3 mornings a week. Without breakfast club, I'd have not been able to accept the role.

Fast forward to last Friday and the school newsletter makes a brief mention of the fact that breakfast club hasn't had much take up and will therefore be terminated at the end of this term - 1 WEEKS NOTICE. NO parent consultation. NO opportunity for parents to try to improve uptake. NO NOTICE! It's unprofessional and unacceptable!

I've complained to the school and the owner of Fiesta Sports Club - the owners response was 'were sorry but we've put it off for some time but here's two free afternoon sessions'. WTAF.

I've asked the school to clarify the notice period.

I have no one else to rely on childcare provision - what options do I have?

I've demanded that the school resolve it an ensure my daughter can be dropped of at 8am.

I've asked the school for the contractual obligations that were agreed between the school and Fiesta.

I'd also like to take this to my local council to complain but am not sure where to start.

I'd be grateful for Any advice

Many thanks.

good grief op

Your job and employer is completely unrelated to your childcare issues

Not when I accepted the job on the basis of the childcare provision being promised for 2 years it's not!

Don’t be so ridiculous, you take up work based on the availability of childcare and you then rely on that childcare to be able to work. If the childcare then falls through without notice you’re entitled to be aggrieved.

You can’t demand that the provider continues to provide a service which clearly doesn’t have the take up to make it viable. You might want it, but it seems as though not enough others did.

You’d be better off researching options, rather than expending energy complaining to all and sundry.

LIZS · 12/02/2024 16:14

Where did they make a promise? Do you mean end of term ie Easter or one week? Are there any child-minders doing school drop offs?

Not demanding that. Completely understand why - the problem lies in the lack of notice!!!!

I'm asking for more notice ... Might not have made that clear I my OP though

How should they make a nonprofitable service profitable if the demand isn't there? You sound like hard work. Don't waste time trying to convince the school that they need to accommodate you here - they really don't. Put your energy into the issue at hand - finding childcare. Look at schools near where you work, live in help, or look again at your job. That's the bare bones of it.

Do you mean the end of term which is Easter, or end of half term?

yes

YOU did

employer was not involved in that decision op

Needmorelego · 12/02/2024 16:17

Do they mean end of term before Easter - or half term?
(It's half term this week where I am but I know some places are next week).
If it's Easter then you have been given decent notice.
Pain in the arse though.
Could you arrange an informal arrangement with a fellow classmate. Drop off your child at theirs and then the parent takes them both to school.

theeyeshaveit82 · 12/02/2024 16:18

you could be spending the researching options rather than very lengthy mumsnet posts

Barbie222 · 12/02/2024 16:19

If you're contacting the school about a decision that was made by an external provider OP, there won't be much the school can do.

Literally end of this term - this Friday. The notification went out last Friday. I live in a village and there's just no one I can rely on for permanent morning childcare sadly.

I can't change my hours as the role I'm currently supporting means 7.30 am starts at depots up to an hour away.y husband has to leave at 7.40 each morning and at a push can be late and drop our daughter off at the 8am breakfast club.

I'm just gutted as I REALLY wanted to do this role and progress and the breakfast club provision gave me the opportunity.

what was your notice period for cancelling breakfasts club?

Well you see I'm good at multitasking...

Why did you comment again ?!

theeyeshaveit82 · 12/02/2024 16:20

how many other children were in the breakfast club?

EBearhug · 12/02/2024 16:20

But if you resign from an employer, it's usually a month's notice, not a week. It's the lack of notice which is the issue, because it gives you no chance of looking at alternatives, and you can't just leave children unsupervised, so the lack of notice will impact the OP's work, whether or not it's part of them or not.

Zoomerang · 12/02/2024 16:20

I get you’re desperate, but that won’t work and is a shitty way to treat the school staff.

theeyeshaveit82 now this is what you call a lovely helpful and kind comment. I'm on here to reach out for support - not unkind, pointless comments that aim to ridicule!

Totally understand why you're cross and frustrated, ignore those who are just looking to kick you whilst you're down.

Is there no childminders or school mum friends she could be left with for the 3 mornings a week? I appreciate it's a big ask but it could hopefully be a temporary solution until you try and work something else out ?

Thank you ... I hardly know anyone in the village. Thos could be a good way to get to know them though so yes might each out.

theeyeshaveit82 · 12/02/2024 16:23

have you spoken with the other parents who used the club? (if there were any!)

Needmorelego · 12/02/2024 16:23

There must be other children in the village? A local parent might be perfectly happy to look after your child and then drop off at school.
Has the school got a Facebook/WhatsApp/whatever? Get on there now ......ASK !!
