Ndn and asbestos

We have been made aware that ndn did not dispose of a large amount of asbestos but instead chucked into their foundations in their extension.

  1. could this ever be harmful to us
  2. or anyone else that may live in their house in the future
  3. as the extension has been built, how could this be proved/ rectified?

thanks

If it's encased then it's not a threat to anyone while it's under there. The problem will come if the foundations are ever dug up in the future as this is now contaminated land.

Failing to properly dispose of asbestos is illegal, but unless you know there is substantive evidence of this taking place or the ground is still open, none of the authorities will do much.

Hopping on this thread to see if anyone knows about asbestos and its disposal. We are hoping to convert a garage with (probably) asbestos in the roof. Should we leave well alone?

@DIYnovices you want to read A11 on this page - https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/essentials/#a1. That relates to the usual types of sheets that are on garage roofs.

If you don't want to do it yourself, it's non- licensed work for any contactor undertaking it. Personally I would want an licensed contractor to remove it properly and clean down. However I'm an ex HSE Inspector with a distinct loathing for asbestos risks so I'm very risk averse!

Lots of people will just do the removal themselves - properly wetting it down, don't smash it up, remove in large pieces, wrap properly and pay for the disposal of at the tip. You usually have to book in for that. Make sure you have a proper mask, wellies and overalls.
