Electric bike recommendations

Looking for E bike recommendations. Would loved an e Brompton but too pricey for me. I'm 5"6 nearing 50 and overweight. I'm looking to go on mainly greenways, towpaths and to the train station if it's foldable. Any ( non MN promoted) recommendations would be appreciated.

Honestly a brompton e bike is fantastic . I have one and love it.

you need to go and test ride. I did. Other folders are heavy and no where near the quality ( unless close to the price point anyway ) . Please check you can lift / carry if you are taking in in places / on trains.

the other folder I considered was the decathlon one - loads cheaper but I thought I’d want to upgrade soon unless it was a dead loss as an idea.

brommie fine on tow paths and tarmac. I did the cinder track from Whitby to Scarborough and did fine but it wasn’t easy riding as the surface was - well cinder track 🤣. I think if I hadn’t been quite used to it I could have been off it as the small wheels aren’t forgiving.

if you are going to find folding / carrying isn’t a big thing for you though go for something with bigger wheels and no fold - then they are pretty heavy and substantial - so you’ll need a shed with easy access ( again if you have to faff getting it out of the back of the garage you probably won’t bother ). Another thing that made the brommie my choice - sits behind the sofa or in the kitchen folded up.

I'm Dutch and wanted a bike that would be sold in Dutch shops too (easy way to know it's quality and what I'm used to). I bought a Gazelle Paris ebike through Cycle2work and it does everything I need it to. I am more than a bit overweight and I cycle on the main roads in a hilly area (though that's by Dutch standards haha) and it copes just fine!

You want to be looking at the torque of the motor as much as or more than the battery. Other things that mattered for me were the riding position and I wanted hub gears as derailleur gears just scream unreliable at me, rightly or wrongly!

Thanks for your replies. Unfythe Brompton is out of my price range. And, to complicate things further I only have a small shed so definitely need a foldable. I also have problems with my arms when I lift something more than say 2/3kg. So a bigger/ heavier bike is a no go

Have you looked at Brompton renewed? Electric C line is about £2.5K plus bike to work discount is £1.4K depending on your tax code.

What is your actual budget?

I had a non e Brompton before an e Brompton so knew what I was getting. The 7 year warranty on the fold/frame is unrivalled and really worth the price imo.
