Has anyone got overwhelming dizzy to the point of being sick when using a treadmill?

i am a seasoned walker (outside) but decided to try out couch to 5k on a treadmill. I have only been doing it once or twice a week so to get to week 6 has taken me about 3 months.

Last week I was about 15 mins in (part walking, park running) and all of a sudden, whilst running, the room started spinning. I held onto the handle bars but it just got worse so I had to stop. Only just managed to stop the machine and then rest my head on the screen but dizziness didn’t stop. I part collapsed part put myself into sitting down and room spinning continued. I shut my eyes but was vomiting within about a minute. Each time I moved even a small amount I was sick. Each time i opened my eyes I was sick. Room spinning without respite. Literally like being on a waltzer.

My brother came to my rescue about an hour later and gave me anti sickness tablet which you disolve under your top lip. He got me to a laying down position and the tablets worked. I have been fine since. Not sick again after the tablets kicked in and no further symptoms.

I can only think it’s some sort of severe motion sickness from the treadmill. Has anyone else had anything like this?

it certainly can happen.

were you watching TV at the time, or looking at something close by? it helps to look out of the window if you can.

I do wonder if it's a blood pressure thing. I went skiing last week (not been since school) and there was a point that I just felt really dizzy and light headed, my vision went blurry and then had floaters. Not as bad as you as no vomiting but I felt really shattered afterwards.

I was looking out of the window directly in front of me. No tv/screen. Had radio playing from my phone which was shelf nearby.

You should probably get your GP to check you over. Do you have a BP machine at home?

FrothAndBubble · 11/02/2024 22:24

Yes, I do. It’s a good idea. I will do some BP checks. I hadn’t considered blood pressure.

I always get dizzy on treadmills so don't use them. I assume it must be a motion sickness type thing.

coloursquare · 11/02/2024 22:28

I would check it quickly now just to be sure it's not dangerously high or low, and if ok I would ring GP first thing.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/02/2024 22:29

Vertigo?

WonderingWanda · 11/02/2024 22:29

It sounds like vertigo to me. Definitely see your gp.

I’m at my brothers until tomorrow night. I’ll check it tomorrow evening and call GP if it’s high.

Vertigo?

That’s what I assumed. Brought on by treadmill. Google tells me treadmills made some people feel dizzy/nauseous although can’t find anything about making the room spin like that or being so bad they vomited repeatedly.

Had a telephone appointment with GP today. She wants me to monitor BP for a week and submit readings as some of my readings over the last 24 hours have been on the high side. She has told me what level to notify them immediately and also to call them if the dizziness happens again. She thinks it’s vertigo but we are just not sure what’s caused it. She’s prescribed tablets to carry with me at all times in case it happens again.
I feel very fearful of it happening again. Can’t imagine how awful it would be if I was at work or out and about.

Exactly this happened to me! It was awful. I stumbled off the treadmill and sat with my head on my lap for a couple of hours. Couldn’t raise my head at all. I was stupidly too embarrassed to call for help and nobody seemed to notice. After a couple of hours I was able to stagger to a pharmacy where I lay on the floor for another couple of hours and they took my BP. I felt weird the whole of the day.

I never went to the doctor. I felt ok the next day. Never went on a treadmill again and have been fine ever since. I guessed it was done kind of extreme vertigo. I really empathise OP.

XenoBitch · 13/02/2024 22:13

This happened to me when I tried cycling after several years of no exercise.
I cycled up a slight incline, and was dizzy, heart racing and cold sweaty. I was on my own so just sat down for ages until it passed. I was about 20 at the time!

Boymum2104 · 13/02/2024 22:32

Yes I can't do treadmills. Something odd about walking/ running but everything around you staying stationary. Makes me very dizzy
