Hi
Anyone...or family/friends...been on one of these breaks? They seem to include entertainment, events etc.
We are thinking of a Christmas break with them as we are alone this year.
I'm guessing they are geared more to the 50 plus age group?
We'd really like to know more about the quality of the breaks.
Are they considered 2/3/4/5 star?
Or have you any suggestions of good Christmas hotel breaks?
TIA.

Yes Warners are good. All food, entertainment etc under one roof
Loads to do if you want to or you can do your own thing.

LIZS · 11/02/2024 21:27

Not for under 65s. We went as a multigenerational group, for. 21- late 80s. Food was better than anticipated but more canteen than restaurant quality with much self service, rooms variable quality, entertainment and facilities mediocre. Drinks expensive. The staff were young and inexperienced and the majority of guests older and entitled.

Tilyoufindyourdream · 11/02/2024 21:27

I’ve been to one of these, really enjoyed it. Activities like a quiz, archery, wine tasting, then time to chill.

SpringSparrow · 11/02/2024 21:29

I used to be a member of the leisure club at one. Most of the guests are probably 65/70 years old plus. The one near me has a pool with jacuzzi, steam room and gym. They have reduced a lot of the activities, they no longer have yoga and Pilates classes. I think they still have archery/ shooting. One year at Christmas they had an ice rink. The entertainment seemed ok. The grounds are nice.

Soupit · 11/02/2024 21:44

Interested in this thread because lve looked at these as a possibleshort UK break. Dh and I fit the demographic. However being over 65 doesn't mean we have a sudden interest in 40s music and bowls. I quite like the idea of lots of entertainment laid on, they seem to do themes such as rock, 80s, etc.
What has put me off are reviews of poor food and service so I'd love to hear something positive!

Sliceofrice · 11/02/2024 23:48

Beautiful room and grounds.
The activities were easy to book on (bar the spa) as the majority of the other guests were age 70+. We went to celebrate a 60th birth with a group from 29-59 for the other guests and a lot of the guests commented how young the birthday lady was.
The evening entertainment was very much what you would get in a working man's club 20 years ago.

Food was nice enough- a good selection for our group with different requirements, but nothing fancy. Lots of plug sockets outside the restaurant for all the mobility scooters parked.
It was very good value for a base, but if you are wanting adventure I'd reconsider and look at Centre Parcs.

Runningwildish · 11/02/2024 23:54

We've been a few times, it's good value, and some resorts have fab pools etc. others not so much, best to go to one of the refurbished ones. They're usually in a nice area, so we've borrowed bikes and been out cycling, or used it as a base for walking, back to a meal and entertainment in the evening. It is mainly older people as it is child free. So not geared for young families.

TheM55 · 12/02/2024 00:05

My sister aged 55 goes to these (sole occupant) and rates them, and she is discerning about what she stays in and what she eats, and what she does. The age range is often older than her, but she has had a good experience every time.
There are a lot of activities you can do if you book in early (the archery etc.) but she has done the quiz alone and enjoyed it, and never a moan about the food or the wine, and the accom has always been "up to standard". Also, if you are a collector of AVIOS with BA, or just topcashback etc, before you buy, have a look at the offers there, because Warner Breaks are often on there. I would give it a go. Hope this helps, xx

RunningFromInsanity · 12/02/2024 00:07

I’ve been to quite a few of these as a 30yr old.
You don’t get quite as much for your money anymore but it is always a great stay.

pinkpale · 12/02/2024 07:34

Thanks everyone. Lots of good information. We are in our 60's but very active and young at heart. Think we will try it.

You'll enjoy. Warners get lots of repeat bookings. They all have a pool as well, if you want a swim.

Thank you for post - I am in my 50's and single so have been looking at this chain. Good to hear the pros and the cons.

Runningwildish · 13/02/2024 10:01

It is very well set up for wheelchair users, I was impressed

Soupit · 13/02/2024 18:24

Has anyone been to Nidd Hall or Thoresby? They are the only ones within a 3 hour drive for me.

I noticed Heythrop Park has specific single rooms...sure some of the others will too.
I spoke to customer service this morning and seems there is lots going on to keep you busy and socializing if you wish.

Yes, I went to Nidd Hall.

PurpleRobe · 17/04/2024 23:57

How was nidd hall @Sliceofrice ? Does it have anything other than archery and axe throwing? I'm going in two weeks but they are the only 2 things available to book
Maybe I left it too late but didn't realise we had to book every little thing :/

Notthatcatagain · 18/04/2024 00:23

We've been to lots and enjoyed every one, the rooms are lovely although the historic rooms are said to be a bit chilly. Never had a bad meal, the grounds are always lovely. We usually go for a room with a patio in the summer. Check what the entertainment is before you book, that's a good guide to how old the crowd will be. Anything with ballroom dancing tends to attract an older group. However they all arrive with proper shoes in a fancy bag and it's entertaining to just watch them, a lot of them are amazing dancers. Our favourites are Thoresby and Holme Lacey, least favourite is Cricket St Thomas, we didn't much like Studley but it was OK. Nidd is nice too. Alveston is great for golfers, the house is pretty but most of the grounds are golfing. Never seen anyone more than mildly merry, no loud single sex groups, no children or dogs. Not the cheapest breaks but we always come home with a smile

We went about 5 years ago, so axe throwing wasn't available but archery and shooting were. They were standard activities, slightly better for being smaller groups actually.

The spa was completely booked up within 30 mins of opening, so we didn't get a chance to experience that unfortunately.
It was a lovely grounds and building, although the spundproofing could have been a bit better! The wifi was lacking as was a lot of signal.
We used it as a base snd it was great for that. As we drove onto the grounds the first people we saw were an elderly lady with a walker being escorted by another lady and we joked that was what we had in stall for the week. Tbh, that is what was in stall for the week! It felt very much like we were in an oap home. It was warm, comfortable, the food was decent (4/6 being veggie too) , the entertainment was poor and out of date and included a few phrases that made our eyebrows raise, but there were enough communal spaces for us to play cards and board games we'd taken.
Great as a cheap base. If you want excitement, head to Center Parcs.

Deathraystare · 18/04/2024 19:48

I am under 65 (just) but have been going to various ones for a few years. Love it . My friends are all older than me anyway. It is better if you have your own transport to get out and about although we did have a coach trip out once.

I really liked the food and that you could have more than one dessert if you wanted!

PurpleRobe · 19/04/2024 08:12

Thanks so much @Sliceofrice it's mostly for my mum's 75th birthday so hopefully she'll enjoy it :D

Yeah the booking thing is a nightmare. Don't feel relaxed at all as we have a strict itinerary!

ferark · 12/05/2024 20:39

I have stayed at both Nidd and Thoresby. I am in my early 50's with limited mobility and my husband is a similar age but very active. We really enjoyed both our stays. You can do as many or few of the activities as you like, there is no pressure but you are advised to pre-book the activities that can be pre-booked, although we had no problems at the time.

I personally prefer Thoresby overall, the building is just staggeringly gorgeous and there are so many places to enjoy it from. We stayed in the new building and it was too far for me to walk to the old building even with my walking aid, so after a couple of days I was exhausted, but I did have a lovely pedicure and swim. My husband on the other had went running in the woodland and joined in all sorts. Knowing this though, we are now booked in for a room in the old building and I can't wait.

Nidd was again fantastic, my husband particularly enjoyed the larger range of free activities there. We stayed in the new building, but booked by phone to discuss best locations and were given excellent advice so I managed fine this time. The only downside, in my opinion at Nidd, is the lack of choice of entertainment venue in the evening. It has the one combined bar and entertainment room, with no separation between them, and I did prefer having a window between the two at Thoresby (as well as a totally separate bar area). I am a bit greedy that way - I liked to see the show but a bit quieter too!

Food was the same at both and we enjoyed it, we even didn't mind that the starters and desserts were pretty much the same each night once we realised this was the case - my husband had the same dessert every night!

The age demographic is mainly older but everyone is there for a good time and let their hair down. Personally I couldn't keep up with them, everyone else seemed to have far much more energy than me! I suspect after noon naps may help, but we keep saying we are going to try to pace ourselves better - but we also don't want to miss out on anything!

Soupit · 13/05/2024 10:50

@ferark Thanks for that lovely detailed report!
Nidd and Thoresby are about equally distant from us and I know both areas.
We do go abroad quite often but UK holidays are different. I hate city breaks and usually go for coast or country. When the DC were young we did center parcs, we may even do that again as a family sometime. My big gripe with CP is the total lack of evening entertainment.
I think this would suit us for a change. I'll look out for suitable entertainment (maybe a rock or 70s/80s weekend).
