How do you work out why a helicopter is circling your house?

I don't think they show up on flight radar, do they? Or if they do, I don't know how to see them

I don't understand why you would want to know? If you live in a large town or city, it probably happens now and again, but doesn't have any impact.

So never in your life have you ever wanted to know anything then I take it?

9 times out of 10 its the police chasing a criminal, 1 time out of 10 its the police looking for a vulnerable person (missing/suicidal)*

*science based statistics from my own anecdotal experience

Edited

Oddly enough from my experience I'd say its the other way around 😂

@woodpecker2 that app is great. Better than flightradar. Thanks

TeenLifeMum · 11/02/2024 19:24

Round here people ask on fb then get slated because we live between a helicopter manufacturer and a naval air base 😂

notknowledgeable · 11/02/2024 19:42

Its still circuling

I live opposite the landing pad for the hospital helicopter so it's usually that. But often police too. They'll just be looking for people on the run

mindutopia · 11/02/2024 19:46

Ask on local facebook group or neighbours. Someone always knows. Where we are it’s either military training or missing person.

One of our neighbours went missing (in 80s, with dementia) a couple months ago. Where we are is very rural - fields, forest, high moor, plus a deep quarry lake, so was a real concern. Posting on neighbours WhatsApp group we found out she was missing and I was able to relay a message that I’d seen her worryingly on the other side of the fence near the quarry lake about 8 hours earlier. This was now about 10pm. Thankfully, search and rescue found her sat in a field near our house about 20 minutes after, and she was cold and shaken but okay.

Disturbia81 · 11/02/2024 19:48

I get you OP, I always wanna know. It's usually missing person here

Caswallonthefox · 11/02/2024 19:49

We have police, ambulance and gas rig helicopters here. They all sound different. If they land then someone usually queries it on our local Facebook page and there us always an answer.

Medusameets · 11/02/2024 19:54

Look at the colour (burgundy is the royals, military usually green but variation, police blueish, sky news blue, other news red etc etc )
Then look if it is landing at Battersea, Horseguards or Buckingham Palace
They are pretty constant and it is the major noise inconvenience. Sometimes 8 landing 1 after another. Much better since the Queen died as the rest of the royal don't really live in London any more.

Disturbia81 · 11/02/2024 20:02

Oh and examining power lines during the day

SausageTolls · 11/02/2024 20:03

We usually get police, air ambulance, electricity company or a neighbour.

aitchteeaitch · 11/02/2024 20:09

We get them occasionally round here. The last few have been police who were looking for missing kids last summer, and air ambulances, one of which landed on the playing field just across the way. There'd been a road accident, and they were called out but in the end they were no longer needed. My god they are loud when they take off so close to your house. We see (and hear) them fairly regularly as there is a mountain biking area the other side of the village, and the cyclists can come a real cropper sometimes.

If you’re one of my neighbours you post a message of faux concern on the local Facebook group- ‘helicopter circling over Acacia Avenue hope no-one is hurt xx’. Grin

Yep, every time.

justasking111 · 11/02/2024 22:08

We get police training, air ambulance, coast guard RAF, and celebrities arriving/departing from a country hotel locally.

Our police are using drones these days as well

YouAndMeAndThem · 11/02/2024 22:18

How can you not just look out of your window? It's unlikely to be any thing other than police or search and rescue if they're hovering or circling

Mindovermatter247 · 11/02/2024 22:27

Look on Facebook on the local town page, guarantee someone will know why it out.

Ursulla · 11/02/2024 23:25

If it's been there all morning you should probably get your brother to keep an eye on the sauce while you dump the guns at your mother-in-law's house. 👌

Get this on our local FB group too.
I'm there for the hilarious replies Grin

I mean, the obvious answer is that they are looking for someone.
If you live in a City it is likely to be a fleeing criminal, and the Police aren't likely to stop doing that to update you via FB, Twitter or any other means. Occasionally it is a vulnerable person - ditto.
If you live in a remote cottage in the mountains, they are more likely looking for lost, fallen or injured hikers or climbers. It's not really rocket science.

TheBeeHives · 12/02/2024 00:51

sometimes its the sound of the engines that difference it eg military vs civilian etc

TheBeeHives · 12/02/2024 00:52

if your out in the open country side then id guess its military mainly

penjil · 12/02/2024 00:58

I lived on the coast for several years, holiday destination. Peak holiday times the helicopters started. Police, coastguard, sometimes it was every day, several evenings a week often late at night.
As long as they’re not searching for you you’re ok.

The Air Ambulances in Kent are navy and white.

The police helicopter is navy and yellow.

Different areas have different colours. 👍

Whatever they're doing will be important. It's not cheap flying the helicopter so it will be something life or limb related. I wouldn't care if it was hovering over my house all night if it meant saving someone's life.

WandaWonder · 12/02/2024 01:29

Sure I am nosy but why do you actually need to know?

Margaritavillee · 12/02/2024 01:49

jesus what’s with all the snide comments? It’s ok to be curious, I’d want to know just out of curiosity

Meadowfinch · 12/02/2024 02:20

Ours are usually either the police helicopter or the local regiment playing with their Chinooks. Different sound, different rotors.

At my old house, there were little apache helicopters they used to practice night flying. After a while your brain just filters out the noise and you don't notice.
