Do you buy your meat in a butchers or supermarket

I normally just buy in Tesco alongside my groceries but I think the quality just hasn't been a good lately. I'd be prepared to pay more if it ment better quality. What's your thought?

At present Aldi but when we move we’ll be using the local butcher (can see them from our balcony!)

GuessThatGranny · 11/02/2024 12:49

Supermarket

Beezknees · 11/02/2024 12:49

Supermarket purely because I can't be arsed going round lots of different shops for food. I get all I need in one place.

Zazzlez · 11/02/2024 12:50

We recently started buying our meat from the butchers, it's much better quality, doesn't cost more than the supermarket, and I can order the exact amount/weight of what I want.

Jingleeaster · 11/02/2024 12:52

Both. It depends where I am if I have an urge. In my town, we've got a butcher, baker and green grocer. I feel very lucky and try to use them to keep them open.

swashbucklecheer · 11/02/2024 12:52

Local butcher. Have built up a relationship with them now so often get first preference on cuts/new stock. The quality difference between supermarket and butcher is unreal! I wouldn't use supermarket meat if I could help it.

swamthelenth · 11/02/2024 12:55

I can't really be bothered, nor do I have the time really to be faffing about with different shops etc but after talking to a few girls in work about this ( who swear butcher meat can't be compared) I'm
Wondering if I missing a trick. Also the butchers not too far from me do nice little curry's and prepped meals that always seem delicious especially when time is short.

A mixture of both, and also the odd box from Abel and Cole too. They do a nice fish and meat box.

I have to say I've pretty much gone off supermarket chicken breast, they are often e tough, anaemic and tasteless. The ones from the butchers are wonderful, and also plump so actually 2 is enough between 4 of us.

I tend to stock up the freezer so I don't need to go weekly to the butchers as I don't have time

Local farm shop, not much more expensive than the supermaket but a lot better quality. I would rather by slightly less and have better (both in terms of quality and welfare)

UtterlyButterly2048 · 11/02/2024 13:01

Definitely the butcher. We use one about 30 minutes drive away, but it’s fantastic and always has a queue. We go every 3 months or so, I phone through my order, they prep it exactly how I want, label it all individually for me and I just go straight in and collect. It freezes brilliantly and the quality is so much better than anything I’ve ever bought from any supermarket. They also do really nice stir fry’s etc so I usually pick up one of those for dinner too.

Queijo · 11/02/2024 13:03

I order our meat and most of our dairy from a local farm (Old Hall Farm - best butter in the entire world)

It does work out slightly more expensive, but the meat quality is about 500x better than anything in a supermarket.

consideringachange · 11/02/2024 13:05

Butcher, but we live in Paris, there are about 5 butchers within a 5 minute walk so though I do a supermarket order for store cupboard stuff once a week I shop for the evening meal at lunchtime on the same day. Quite a different lifestyle from most in the UK I know because we were in London till recently.

ilovebagpuss · 11/02/2024 13:06

Bit of both mainly for cost reasons. I actually hate the mass produced chicken but I can't afford organic or free range every time.
We have a great local butchers and the meat comes from farms in the local area.
They do amazing pies and sausages and homemade burgers.
If it wasn't a case of budget I would go out of my way to go there for all of my meat.
I am trying to eat less meat and just buy better.

APurpleSquirrel · 11/02/2024 13:12

We get the majority from the butcher - usually once a month or so & stick up the freezer. It's much better quality & you can get the amount you want.
I do buy a bit from the supermarket but usually if I can't get to the butchers.
Plus it's supporting a fab local, family owned business who win a lot of awards.

SplodgeOfCustard · 19/02/2024 14:13

I currently buy from Tesco. I have been wondering whether to switch to Costco.

TonTonMacoute · 19/02/2024 14:20

I buy all my meat and dairy from local suppliers, but I do live very rurally and we have a local food hub which makes it easy. We also buy meat from friends who farm.

I do believe in the buy better buy less, but although the produce is more expensive in fact my weekly shopping bill is about a third of what I used to spend when I shopped in the supermarket.

It's amazing how good supermarkets are at getting you to spend more money than you need to!

NeedWineNow · 19/02/2024 14:44

Butchers usually, although the meat in our local Aldi is always very good.

Our butchers is literally 30 seconds away and also does veg, cheese, eggs etc so it's really easy to run down and get what we need and pop it straight home and into the fridge. The meat is always good quality and I like the fact that he knows how thick I like steaks cut so he'll cut me two off a new sirloin for instance. Also I can get the weight I need, or just 4 sausages instead of 8. There's not that much difference in price from the supermarket either.

We're lucky in that we've got several very good farm shops near us so by and large I just use the supermarket for tinned goods, paper goods etc.

AhBiscuits · 19/02/2024 14:48

Supermarket because of time and convenience. I feel bad about it though, loads of nice butchers nearby. Maybe I need to make an effort.

NotFastButFurious · 19/02/2024 15:06

Supermarket because I can't get to a butchers when they're open or I'd happily support my local businesses for better quality meat.

Psychoticbreak · 19/02/2024 15:10

Butcher.

CatchAButterfly · 19/02/2024 15:13

Both. A good butcher is noticeably better when it comes to the quality of the meats. But as we do most of our shopping via Ocado, we only go to the butcher when we have nothing in for dinner.

I buy mostly from local supermarket but I do use a farm shop if I happen to be passing it for meat and vegetables. It's about 9 miles away so I wouldn't make a special trip but if I'm going over that way unlike to use it. They sell lovely fresh eggs too.

neverendingnonsense · 19/02/2024 15:27

I buy from the butcher. It's much better quality, he gives us bones for the dog as well as samples of new cheeses etc when he has them. I do have to have a spare hour when I go there though as he loves a chat.

fussychica · 19/02/2024 15:55

We used to have a good butcher in the town but he retired. The remaining butcher's meat always looks totally unappealing so I now buy in the supermarket which is a shame. I buy chicken in M&S, beef and pork usually from Morrisons which has a pretty good butchery counter as well as self service. The nearest farm shop is just too expensive and I say that as someone who is fortunate not to have to stint on food.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/02/2024 15:59

The butcher.
They have cuts you can't get in the supermarket.
The only beef you can buy to roast in any supermarket I've been to is silverside.
Butchers have rib joints and they're so tasty and amazing.
