Yellowing toilet seat - how to turn white again?

Any tips on how to get a yellowing toilet seat back to it's original colour. It's plastic which I've never had before and from searching on Google, I think it may have turned yellow from using bleach products on it :(

Have tried vinegar and bicarb but it's still yellow - please help!!

Simple answer - you can't. Once the plastic has gone yellow nothing will bring it back.

however new toilet seats are easy to fit and really cheap.

It's had it. Chuck it out and replace it.

Boredwored · 10/02/2024 22:35

:( thank you, I will see if I can fit a new one. Was really hoping that there would be a magic fix, but I guess if trusty vinegar and bicarb don't work, nothing will!!

Yes you can. I wouldn't bother for a toilet seat but I have successfully "rewhited" other plastic items but using metal polish on extremely fine wire wool.

Oh, I think I know this one!

Magic eraser / magic sponge (different names for same thing). Lots of them on Amazon etc, very cheap.

I tried everything else on our yellowing loo seat (including vinegar and bicarb) and this was the only thing that worked. Works on the same basis as the very fine wire wool mentioned by a previous poster, but it's even more fine (if you see what I mean). You just dampen it and rub away.

I should say that I don't usually like using magic sponges because I don't think it's good for the environment. But then throwing away a loo seat is even worse for the environment, so it's worth a go.

Ahhh it's helpful to know that using bleach can turn the seats yellow as it's happened to two of my seats and I couldn't work out why ! I will look up magic sponges- never heard of them either 🙂

EbonyRaven · 10/02/2024 23:11

Try toothpaste. Put it on a toothbrush you want to throw away, and give it a scrub.

Treehugger22 · 10/02/2024 23:15

It is bleach products because I'm having the same issue

petronella23 · 10/02/2024 23:19

Silver dip sorts out yellow bleach stains on plastic.

Synergies · 10/02/2024 23:21

Replacement time.

GenerousGardener · 10/02/2024 23:30

I used The Pink Stuff and a nylon scourer as recommended to me by the plumber that fitted my bathroom. Give it a few goes over and the yellow is gone. Result.

Caswallonthefox · 10/02/2024 23:38

I got a new one from argos for somewhere round £13.

Boredwored · 11/02/2024 11:05

Thanks everyone - think fitting a new one is the easiest thing to do.

For curiosity's sake, if you can't use bleach products on plastic/non stone toilets seats, how do you keep them thoroughly clean/germ-free?

I am not obese but go through toilet seats every two years. They do not get a chance to turn yellow with me!

Caswallonthefox · 11/02/2024 16:13

Bathroom wipes. I hate the smell of bleach, so I use anything but.

Floralnomad · 11/02/2024 16:21

The Pink paste works really well

rllrsk8 · 09/06/2024 16:39

Been watching this thread for ages and finally tried Bar Keepers Friend - the powder version, bought to clean our new worktops but decided to try it amzn.eu/d/e3Teiok

It worked! Applied with a damp cloth, minimal scrubbing needed, it's white again. Finally!

MissMarplesNiece · 09/06/2024 17:03

Same as @GenerousGardener . The pink stuff is really good.

RettyPriddle · 20/06/2024 13:00

It’s an old thread I know; I found it when I was wondering how to sort my own loo seat out. I have just used a very coarse emery board and some laundry powder and it’s worked a treat. Good as new.

Borborygmus · 20/06/2024 13:05

It may be sunlight causing the yellowing.

BorgQueen · 20/06/2024 13:07

Use disinfectant instead of bleach, bleach is for IN the toilet not the seat.

Astonish do heavily concentrated ones for £1. The lemon one is so nice I use it diluted in a reed diffuser.
