Is this a scam?

I am selling a phone on market place and someone wants to buy it. At first he offered Paypal which I refused and he is now offering a bank transfer or cheque, he said he will trust me to post it when the cheque has cleared. What do you think? He has given me his address and its about 45 minutes away.

Scam

He'll 'overpay' and ask you to repay the extra, then ask for the 'overpay' back.

You'll then find the original cheque will bounce and you'll be without the phone the payment for the phone and the cash you 'repaid'

With Facebook, always try to have someone with you and make the ad clear.

Cash on collection ONLY

If you asked for cash on collection, stick to that.

It's hardly like there's a shortage of phones on Marketplace for him to find something closer. There's a chance it could be legit, but I wouldn't risk it. Cash on collection!

Could also see how much online places or little phone shops might give you for it. Prob going to be a bit less, but no messing with idiots and scammers.

Only accept cash on collection.

Hard to tell. I’ve bought on Facebook several times (for both business and personal purchases) and use PayPal Goods & Services to pay if not close by. No issues as of yet, but must be a faff for the buyer taking photos of the packaging or pick-up of item and the proof of postage etc. And there’s always the risk.
For something high value like an iPhone, I’d much prefer cash on collection. And it’s a bit suss as he’s quite close by. I did once sell an iPhone online, again accepting PayPal, and it was fine on that occasion. Not sure I’d do it via that method again, though.

Cash on collection only. It's the only thing that Facebook say you should do.

Unfortunately we have painted ourselves into a corner with mobile and online banking, cashless transactions and so on.

Very common scam is where someone agrees to buy your phone and offers to pay you via bank transfer BEFORE it's collected, then their "Brother/Sister, friend, uncle, neighbour, some guy the met down the pub" will come to collect the item as the buyer is too busy/on holiday or some other nonsense.

You agree, they WILL pay you, and someone will collect the phone. You think, "great, just sold my phone". A day or two later you get a message from your bank saying the payment was made with a stolen/cloned card and they recall the transaction.
