Are those cheap reading glasses any good...

... as I've just been for my first ever eye test, I'm late 40s, and had noticed lately I've to hold anything with small print a bit away from me.

Anyway, optician said it was totally up to me but she'd recommend getting a pair with lowest prescription and anti-glare. I went with this, will be handy to have if I need for reading, but the price! A family member uses those cheap ones from Poundland and I'm wondering should I have just gone for those?

I have them for reading as I only needed a +1.25. The opticians suggested buying the cheaper pair as they'd be as good as a prescription pair at a much higher cost.

Getonnow · 09/02/2024 17:07

Yes. They do the same job as any others, provided your eyes aren't wildly different to each other.

LightSwerve · 09/02/2024 17:14

They are fine if your prescription is the same in both eyes?

I have a good pair at home and a cheap pair to take out in my bag so it doesn't matter if they get lost or broken.

I find them really handy even though I have prescription ones too. Usually have a cheap pair in my bag wherever I go.

Ok if same prescription in both eyes they also don't correct astigmatism. Worth giving them a try to see.

TheSnowyOwl · 09/02/2024 17:28

Most people don’t have the same deterioration in both eyes or else they also need an astigmatism corrected but they are fine to wear if it’s just to correct being long sighted.

I went to my optician got a measurement for reading glasses for over my contact lenses. I was all ready to shell out for expensive glasses. I was sick of not being able to read and wanted the best. She told me not to waste my money and buy a cheap pair. I have been seeing her for years and she has never steered me wrong.

BroccoliHighkicks · 09/02/2024 17:38

I used to wear some with my contact lenses, which corrected my short sight and astigmatism, but I needed the reading glasses for reading. Cheap ones were fine.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2024 17:39

I get off the shelf ones, I keep a pair in all the rooms I read in, and handbag, with a slightly lower power than my prescription for computer work (on the advice of the optician). They've never tried to persuade me to shell out for a prescription pair.

Watchkeys · 09/02/2024 17:40

Why not try them? They're so inexpensive, and they work for some people and not others.

Cookerhood · 09/02/2024 17:41

I wear contact lenses & my optician told me to buy some cheapies for reading. I have a few pairs scattered around.
A friend had some from Primark. I went in to get some to be told that they sell out by 11am!

Spidey66 · 09/02/2024 17:47

I get cheap ones from Poundland. I normally buy 4-5 pairs of a time so I’ve got some in every room, bag, at work etc. They break fairly easily but hey they’re only £1.50

Same here

I've got proper reading glasses for work etc but buy the cheap Poundland glasses to shove in a bag and take out and about eg. to restaurants.

3 pairs for £3!!
