Best vitamin/ supplement for energy

Hi everyone, I'm a 40 year old mother of 2 with a full time job, so a busy enough lifestyle. Also I have concerns that I'm perimenopausal. I swim 3 mornings a week.

My energy levels are beyond a joke. I've just woken from an unplanned nap because I happened to have 30 mins to sit down by myself.

Early in the week I was dozing off while sitting at the computer in an office chaiir.

Yesterday I dozed off at 6pm while the kids were in the living room playing.

It's gotten to the point of ridiculous. What can I take to try and boost my energy levels? I have an appointment on Thursday with the GP about something else so I will also ask for a blood test. Thanks

Vitamin B complex and vitamin D. I’d also consider stopping alcohol.
Thyroid can go under active at this age, so ask for that to be checked, along with iron.

@DustyLee123 thanks. I only drink a couple of times a year so it's definitely not the problem!

Ho get a blood test! I felt the same and I was really low on b12 and D.

The only supplement that can give you more energy is topping up on something you are lacking in. If you already have sufficient, then adding more won't help.

Having said that, don't just take your doctors word for it that your results are 'satisfactory' or 'in range'. With many of the vitamins and minerals, many people need to be near the top of the range, or at least in the top half to feel well. As your doctor for a copy of your results and research online optimum levels.

Just like we all need different amounts of food, sleep and exercise to feel well, so the amount of various vitamins and minerals we need varies.

B12, D and iron and folate are the obvious ones - plus as a pp has said, low thyroid can also cause fatigue and low energy.

Andthereyougo · 09/02/2024 17:12

Everything @NannyGythaOgg said.
Plus if you need B12 take folic acid too as B12 needs it to function correctly.
Your GP will probably only test TSH for thyroid. If this is raised look at Blue Horizon or similar lab for a more thorough test.

Best vitamins and minerals would be:
More protein. so consider protein shakes Or from natural sources.
Omegas 3,6 and 9 to help with joint care,
Vitamin D3
Vitamin K
More Soy based products due to estrogen and other sex hormones alter how your body metabolizes carbs and fats during menopause, which may contribute to weight gain.

include soybeans, tofu, tempeh, grapes, beans, flaxseeds, linseed, sesame, and black and green tea.

That's said limit processed carbs and refined sugars
So pastry, sugar in tea or coffee, sweets, cakes etc should be limited.
Limit alcohol

I would say if you're not already is take up resistance training and build up cardiovascular health.

It’s important to get enough nutrients by way of whole grains, protein, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. These foods keep your body nourished and protect against age-related muscle loss, as well as reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

I hope this helps

how is your night time sleep?
do you snore?
high blood pressure?

sleep apnoea can cause daytime tiredness.

AliceAforethought · 27/02/2024 13:06

Don't think I can add anything. I was only going to suggest:
Vit D, Vit B complex, The omegas, iron, magnesium, lots of water and, if you can, exercise: both cardio and strength.

GMH1974 · 27/02/2024 13:10

Please get yourself checked out by a doctor. I was like this and it turned out I was getting gangrene following a hernia repair which went wrong. I kept wanting to sleep and thought it was just because I was a busy mother of 2. It wasn't, I had blood poisoning and ended up in hospital for a week and lucky to survive when my intestine ruptured.

frazzled101 · 27/02/2024 14:43

Thanks everyone. I've been to the doctor. Unfortunately it was a locum rather than my usual GP and she was completely uninterested. However she agreed to my request for bloods and I'll hopefully get the results tomorrow.

Would highly recommend vitl vitamins, you fill
In a questionnaire and the prescribe the ones you need. I did the trial and found I had more energy and slept so much better so I have continued a subscription with them. I have a referral link if you would like it just let me know.
