If you're in your mid or late fifties and still working full time, how do you feel?

Because I'm knackered! Is everyone else? And do you feel old at work? Or are you surrounded by a lot of people your age?

I have been working FT OTH for a long time it feels and I'm starting to feel old at work. If you don't, why not?

I have 2.5 years to go. I’m debating finding a new job because my boss is a pita, but I think people might turn me down because I’m in my fifties. I’m still keen to work, I have more energy than ever. 🤷‍♀️

Be careful.. from what I understand Pilate is not more gentle than beginner's yoga, and can be quite brutal.

Absolutely, pilates is much tougher than yoga. It's great, but by no means an easy option.

Perhaps I have been ill informed.

57 and have worked full time all my life. I do like my job but not enough to want to work much past 60. I'm ok. Tired of working not tired in body. It's just the same old merry go round isn't it?

I'm unlikely to be able to afford to retire at 60 (like many) but hope to go part time when I hit 60. Simply because there has to be more to life than this monotonous treadmill.

I'm just wondering.. could it be that as we get older we just don't sleep as well as we did and that's making us feel knackered? I don't work at 56 but feel like I'm in my 40's due to strength training. But I don't sleep unless I take Nitol or similar, and on the days I don't sleep I feel knackered and old.

Agree with this. I rarely get enough good sleep. My BP goes up significantly when I'm tired. Used to work nights a lot 10 years ago but had to stop due to BP. BP meds make me tired with no energy so that doesn't help. But no matter how tired I am I can't fall asleep or stay asleep 😭

I am nearly 66 - work 3 days a week in a job I love - more mentally challenging than physical - can be a scary environment - I have no intentions of retiring just yet.

I also feel lack of sleep has a lot to answer for. My sleep is awful and has been since I stopped taking HRT in 2021 after a breast cancer diagnosis.

I do seem to sleep better on holiday though.

Oh my gosh I’m knackered too! I’m 47 ( look younger) work part time and I am one of the older staff members, all managerial staff is younger than me… some could be my children. I work part time but will need to go full time next year. But I feel tired already. Always tired. I do feel old inside, trying to keep up with everything at work and not be called lazy as my body slows down and doesn’t want to do what I ask of it. My job is a fast pacing job. Your part time feels more like a full works day.

I feel I need 3 days of rest, one for solo resting , one for cleaning cooking organising etc, and another for family quality time.

I have no idea how I’ll cope once I go full time. 😂 it really scares me!
Wouldn't be wonderful to have the same energy of my grandchildren?? 😂

I thought I was the only one that felt like this but looks like it’s a more of a normal thing than I thought. At least I’m glad to see that. 😝

Yes me to 55 and have done physically demanding jobs all my life and kept fit but recent blood test showed up quite a few things and explained why so fatigued all the time.working reduced hours at present and gradually trying to get back up to full strength.everyting suddenly feels like a struggle even the things I never use to think about.cant wait to retire now

This has been a really interesting thread. Most friends my age have admitted that in their mid to late 50s they are getting more tired.

More wfh and dropping a day a week have helped people immensely.

I exercise 3 (ish) times a week, walk a lot, have a dog - socialise at the weekends and mid week. And eat healthily. No kids at home.

But there's nights when all I want to do is get home and sit on the sofa. Weekends have got slower as well.

And I know I'm more tired at work.

I could probably afford to retire but

  1. I'm not sure quite how I'd fill my time and I'm worried I might turn into a hermit.
  2. I like the nice level of holidays/life we can afford with us both working.

I'm more than likely going to go 4 days a week this year, unless the summer is crap again. Just that day of not having to be up or working to a schedule would be great.

59 and knackered.
Hoping to access some pension and drop to part-time when I turn 60.
The job's mentally rather than physically taxing (although I do sometimes nee to stand up for 6 hours at a stretch), but I have an hour each way drive to work and I think that doesn't help much either.

This thread just came up on my notifications. Here we are one year later, I'm now 60 and even more knackered ... definitely dropping to three days a week this year.
It didn't happen last year as we lost a member of staff and it dropped us in it a bit. I think if I'd dropped some days I'd have just ended up doing the work but not getting paid for it. It's going to happen this year though, I feel like I can't really keep up the pace these days

EmpressSoleil · 19/03/2025 17:13

I wfh so what I do now is 8 hours on a Saturday, which I'm used to doing as I was doing overtime for ages! Another 8 on a Wednesday. Then the rest of the week days I work 8am -1pm. It means I am working 6 days a week but it feels so much easier than M-F 9-5.

I never really did much on Saturdays anyway. No partner and if I want to go somewhere I'd rather do it in the week when it's less busy. I still have all day Sunday if I want to meet up with people.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 19/03/2025 17:33

Just accepted a new FT job after taking redundancy from my 80% role (which I hated). Really hoping it's going to give me a new lease of life and it's remote apart from a bit of travel so hope I can cope with the FT hours again.

Ihateboris · 19/03/2025 17:42

I'm 54, been working since I was 16 doing admin/secretarial work, and I really, really wish I could stop working. I'm shattered 😲

Goldenmemories · 19/03/2025 18:11

I'm a full time primary teacher and don't know how I'll keep it up for another 25 years 😬 I'm physically fit, go to the gym regularly but it's the combination of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion that culminates towards the end of term that gets me.

Gettingbysomehow · 19/03/2025 18:20

I'm 63 and work full time, I enjoy working and hope to keep going until 70. I'm the oldest person at work but people don't really notice because I'm young at heart and love fashion. Nobody comments on my age.
