Is this normal??

Ds started nursery in October and since then he's had a new cold pretty much every week. I knew to expect this so wasn't super surprised by it.

However, I've also had every cold he's brought home and I'm starting to wonder if that is normal? I thought I had a better immune system than that of a 14mth old! I take my vitamins every day religiously, I eat reasonably well and ds is now a pretty good sleeper so I feel that I get decent sleep and my job is really social and I'm with lots of young people every day! Is this something every parent goes through with nursery starting or is there something I'm missing?? Before having ds I rarely got the cold! Does this improve and if so when does it start to slow down?

It's normal OP. This year there's been so many different viruses about. Me and my husband caught covid for the first time just before Christmas and I still have a slight cough even now. I rarely get coughs and colds but I've had an ear infection as well and as soon as that cleared up I was back to coughing and sniffing again. I know so many people who have been ill this winter.

Yes, it's relatively normal. What I found helped was vitamin C, zinc and echinacea, not just vitamins in general, but relatively high doses of the above. Even now (mine are well into school age now), if anyone in the house gets sick, I start taking them and I very rarely get sick or at least only mildly.

It's not quite what you're asking, but what also helped a lot lately is not drinking alcohol. You may not drink or much at all. But I don't drink anymore, but dh still does (not to any extreme though). Dh has been ill constantly with everything the kids bring home. I've had a teeny cold for like a day or two maybe twice since the summer. I actually probably spend more time near the kids in close contact. But the main difference between us really is our alcohol consumption.

Thanks, I might go check the amounts that are in my multivitamins and add zinc and echinacea to that. I barely drink any alcohol, switched to alcohol free versions when I was pregnant and then just stuck with it! Thanks both I was starting to think something wasn't quite right!!

Totally normal.

When i started as a TA (even though i'd already had kids in school for a couple of years and thought i had got the immunity thing pretty much nailed) i caught every bloody thing going. For about 6 months. (apart from nits thank fuck)

THEN i developed the immune system of a concrete elephant 😂

DD is 4 and I am still getting everything she gets. Never been more ill as an adult, hideous.
My sickness record is appalling as I keep getting secondary bacterial infections on top of the viruses.
There must be an end but it may kill me.

Halfemptyhalfling · 09/02/2024 14:39

Much better to get vitamins from a healthy diet - studies tend to find vitamin tablets make no difference.

mummaoftwogirls · 09/02/2024 14:43

Yeah totally normal, your both being exposed to a whole new germ pool than you usually would be so your immune systems both need to adapt to that.
My 4 year old was Ill weekly for the first 6 months of nursery and 9 times out of 10 DH and I caught it too, thankfully it's calmed down now we're 18 months in and there's a lot less things we catch now.

This is what worries me, thankfully I'm using holidays to be back part time initially so the week isn't as long and I've only had to take one day off to look after ds so far but it does worry me that illness could affect my absence record and performance because I've a very high energy role.
