Is it normal just to clean your teeth on an evening and NOT when you wake up on a morning 🤢The said person showers every day for 3 or 4 minutes so is clean in that way. but never cleaned there teeth as they get up

The guidelines say clean your teeth at night and once any other time of day.

wubwubwub · 08/02/2024 18:58

They should be brushing twice a day.
Not necessarily when they get up though.

catlovingdoctor · 08/02/2024 19:01

Needs to be twice a day to remove the plaque layer that builds up.
Brushing for 4 minutes in one go is counter-productive because 2 minutes is adequate to remove that layer- all the extra time does is scrub away the tooth enamel.

Why are you timing their showers? Does their breath smell?
if it’s a child then it needs enforcing. If it’s an adult, leave them be even though it’s gross

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 08/02/2024 19:02

Twice a day is minimum to be a hygienic person

Where does the OP say that they brush for 4 minutes?

So so disgusting. At least twice a day for 3 mins each time, and floss. No one wants to see or kiss an unclean mouth. Also massively contributes to decay etc if you don't.... your mouth I guess 👍

Grendacious · 08/02/2024 19:05

I cannot personally vouch for this in any way shape or form BUT someone from a big dental school in London told me that there is no evidence whatsoever that a thorough clean once a day is inferior to twice a day. The issue is that across the population the level of cleaning isn't always going to be to a high enough standard to count, so it makes sense to send out a consistent message of twice a day. Off the back of that, if your person is taking their evening dental hygiene seriously and has no issues at the dentist I wouldn't think they were gross at all.

PersephonePomegranate · 08/02/2024 19:09

I always brush both night and morning, however it has crossed my mind before that I as I usually brush before breakfast, it would probably be more beneficial to brush once I've eaten at work.

Leaving the house without brushing my teeth would just feel wrong though!

You need to be careful about cleaning your teeth just after eating food. Ideally leave at least 30-60 minutes after eating or drinking a hot drink. If I clean my teeth before breakfast it spoils the taste. So I usually clean mine mid-morning and before I go to bed, this is obviously harder if you need to go out straight after breakfast.

That's interesting.

I wonder if the inept brushing has changed at all since electronic toothbrushes are so widespread now?

This is what I'd worry about!

People don't use the electric toothbrushes properly usually.

I believe the saying is "brush at night to keep your teeth, brush in the morning to keep your friends". :)

goingdownfighting · 08/02/2024 19:21

Ok so tooth brushing needs to be effective. Cleaning teeth isn't easy sometimes. If your teeth are crooked and they have old rough fillings then it can take a lot of time and effort.

Perhaps it's the quality of the cleaning. Might take cleaning should be diligent and detailed.

Also the usual cause of bad breath is gum disease so likely a trip to the dentist or hygienist might be in order to tackle the areas under the gum line that can't be cleaned and where most of the smelly stuff happens.

Bad breath can also come from other things like acid reflux which is very common as well. In children tonsils and snot can be smelly too.

I like to recommend a Sonicare as it is proven to clean the tooth down to enamel level. Perhaps start there and book a dentist/hygienist appointment. A lot of practices offer hygiene without needing to see a dentist as well.

My bad, was skim-reading so thought the 4 minute showering was tooth brushing!

Diet, smoking/vaping and medical conditions can cause your breath to smell.

I'm lactose intolerant and you can tell from my breath if I've had anything with milk in it. Cleaning my teeth makes no difference as it comes up from my gut.

ArcticBells · 08/02/2024 19:28

I can't imagine not cleaning my teeth morning and night. But then I think teeth are incredibly important

Discontentedpony · 08/02/2024 19:30

I asked my dental hygienist a week ago if you should brush teeth before or after breakfast (source of disagreement with children) and he said you should brush teeth within half hour of waking up.

NannyGythaOgg · 08/02/2024 20:03

There's a big sign in my dental surgery

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH
... ... ... ... .... ...... ... ... . .. . .. .. . .. . . . .. . .. . . . .. . .

just the ones you want to keep!

AnathemaPulsifer · 08/02/2024 20:18

My dentist astonished me by saying she’d rather I brushed my teeth once a day for four minutes (ie really thoroughly) than twice a day for two minutes.

AnathemaPulsifer · 08/02/2024 20:20

To clarify, she said the once a day should be in the evening.
