Kindle Paperwhite

I have a very old kindle with no backlight, I want to update it to a backlit one so I can read whilst captive in a small child’s room waiting for them to sleep.

Will an old model do the job? What does more money get you? Help me!

I adore my paperwhite. Light enough to hold in one hand, waterproof and the back light is really adjustable. I've had it around 3yrs now with no problems.

I would pay extra for a waterproof model purely for the number of times the kids have spilled drinks near/on it but no reason not to get one that's a bit older.

My old (non backlit) Kindle finally gave up the ghost after 12 years. DH bought me this to replace it and I love it. Not the top end one but perfect for an avid reader. Unless you've got a squillion books you don't need a higher storage one either tbh

The basic kindle now has a backlight.

Also, check if you can still trade in your old kindle - mine was ancient so I think I only got about £20 off, but they'll accept it as long as it's still taking a charge and the screen isn't damaged.

Purpleavocado · 08/02/2024 15:34

I have a paperwhite and love it. There are lots of kindle reviews and comparisons in YouTube so you can get a good idea there.

I found the switch from my old Kindle with buttons to Paperwhite really annoying. Yes it's backlit but the touchscreen to change pages is really annoying. It's been years and I still don't like it, I hardly ever use it. You could use the kindle app on your phone in dark mode, I use that instead of my actual kindle most of the time.

I got a Paperwhite when they were really new in 2013 (because my then-toddler stood on my clicky button Kindle). Still going strong and I love it. Sometimes the touch screen is slightly annoying (it's very hard to go back a few pages because half the time you miss the very narrow left hand window and it goes forwards instead), but I much prefer it to clicky buttons. I can advance the page with my nose in extremis

No idea what the specs are but presume as it's an early model, it's the most basic spec.

I got the new waterproof one. It's got a great feature where I can set a schedule to have a more orange coloured back-light. I have mine set from midnight to 6am, I'm a poor sleeper so I can read without the bright light waking my husband up.

determinedtomakethiswork · 08/02/2024 15:55

I just bought an Amazon fire because I can use it with my library card. I haven't paid for a book for years!

SoupDragon · 08/02/2024 16:09

I've had a Paperwhite since they were new. I love them (I have the "signature" one now - the others have been handed down the family).

Hoglet70 · 08/02/2024 16:09

I love my Paperwhite. It feels really compact compared to my old Kindle.

reluctantbrit · 08/02/2024 17:00

I love my paperwhite. Light and small to fit in my hand bag.

I don‘t like reading on a tablet or phone, too much glare and either too small (phone) or too big (tablet)

Butchyrestingface · 08/02/2024 18:18

I had the paperwhite and then got an Oasis last year (helloooo, clicky buttons!). Backlist and warm light.

Now I want a Kindle Scribe cos I'm a big wean.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/02/2024 18:21

My Paperwhite must be 10 years old. Masses of books on it. Perfect for reading without disturbing anyone else at night. Recharges very quickly, too.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/02/2024 18:24

I have an Oasis. I had a Paperwhite a long time ago and I missed having buttons, mostly because you need one hand to hold and one to swipe on a Paperwhite but you can hold and press a button with the same hand (yes, I am that lazy Grin). I would recommend going for the model before the current one if it's available, it's usually a lot cheaper. I left my Oasis in a hotel when I was on holiday and had to replace it and bought an older generation one for around £100 less than the most up to date.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/02/2024 18:26

Also, bide your time and keep an eye out for deals. They often reduce them for sales, and there are usually some refurbed ones available at a good price.

Spooky! I left MY first Oasis in a hotel last year and even though I phoned the very next days, the lying liars claimed they'd never seen it.

Fuckitydoodah · 08/02/2024 18:28

My paperwhite is about 4 years old. I like that I can use night mode without disturbing anyone if I can't sleep. I like that I can adjust the font size and screen brightness. The charge lasts ages. I find it straightforward to find and upload books. I'd repurchase tomorrow if I had to.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/02/2024 18:29

@Butchyrestingface Mine matched the top of the bedside table perfectly, which is why I fogot to pack it. It might still be sitting there unnoticed, being used as a coaster or something. Grin I bought a really pretty skin from Etsy so that the new one will be eye-catching in future.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2024 18:33

I don't. Hold in one hand and swipe with a thumb. Easy.

DrSpartacular · 08/02/2024 18:57

I replaced my original Paperwhite with a Voyage which was a short lived model (no idea why, it's great), but basically a Paperwhite with buttons. I so much prefer the buttons.

Danikm151 · 08/02/2024 19:00

I love mine. I got it off ebay a few years ago.

EffortlessDistraction · 08/02/2024 20:49

I don't find the swiping with my thumb easy at all, somehow it disrupts the reading too much as it's a big movement. Hard to explain. But with the button version you could just rest it on the button and barely move it. Likewise I find the upward swipe on the kindle app far less distracting than the sideswipe on the paperwhite. Mine's been a waste of money TBH.

The thing I like about kindle (original) is that it isn’t backlit. That’s the whole bloody point. It’s like reading a book and works in the sunlight/doesn’t give you issues with sleep. Not sure what I’ll do when mine gives up the ghost.

You can turn the backlight off!

Great. But I don’t want it. I want a kindle basic with the clever paper like screen and no fancy shit I don’t need or want.
