Anyone else got these weird Covid symptoms?

sprigatito · 08/02/2024 15:14

This is my third Covid infection and it's an absolute fucker. All the usual fever, hacking cough, sinus pain etc. I've got a few things I didn't have last time though, and wondered whether others have had similar?

Brain shocks - like electrical jolts where everything goes blurry

Visual disturbances - woke up yesterday with strobe effect, and it's been off and on since

Really vicious stabbing pain in lower abdomen

Pulsing left-sided headache

Stiff neck, painful to turn my head

Numbness in fingertips and roof of mouth

Burning chest pain when doing any sort of exertion, like going to the loo and back - it feels like being suffocated and leaves me breathless and knackered for ages

Anyone recognise this? Is it a new strain or something? DS2 (19 and fit) has it too and he's so ill he looks like a skeleton after just over a week, and is being seen this afternoon for possible pneumonia (he's coughing up blood).

I'd be concerned over some of the symptoms, so might be worth speaking to 111. Hope your DS is ok.

DistinguishedSocialCommenator · 08/02/2024 15:20

They can vary and you have a lot,

So, contact the GP for an appointment and if cant get one for today, call 111

Good luck

sprigatito · 08/02/2024 15:22

My gp (receptionist) refused me an appointment, and 111 told me to see my gp! It's pretty desperate in my area, DS2 was lucky to get seen.

Back to 111 and tell them your GP surgery is refusing to see you.

Most likely it’s just Covid doing its funky stuff but you really do need a medical assessment to check that it hasn’t funked its stuff so far that it’s caused something serious.

I've just had covid for the first time. I can definitely relate to some of those:

Brain shocks - like electrical jolts where everything goes blurry Yes, definitely. It feels like something squeezes my brain and releases it again. Just momentarily. Makes me feel dizzy.

Visual disturbances - woke up yesterday with strobe effect, and it's been off and on since No

Really vicious stabbing pain in lower abdomen No

Pulsing left-sided headache Yes. It feels like a migraine is about to really start hard. However I am off work with massive stress too, so I was putting it down to stress.

Stiff neck, painful to turn my head Not now, but I did have a couple of days where the whole top of my back, shoulders and neck felt stiff and achy.

Numbness in fingertips and roof of mouth I haven't had this but I have a patch on my left arm which is really itchy. It feels like I've got an allergy itch, but there's no raised spots, or redness. It's like having shingles without the spots (but it's not the area I have shingles)

Burning chest pain when doing any sort of exertion, like going to the loo and back - it feels like being suffocated and leaves me breathless and knackered for ages It sounds like it could be "covid induced pleurisy" which I have. It's not as bad mostly as the first day, but it still catches me every now and then, especially if I've been out in the cold air.

I would get yourself checked out as well as ds2. I was in A&E with the pleurisy, so got thoroughly checked out there.

I've been diagnosed with a rare eye condition that can happen after an infection like covid. It's called mewds. It caused flashing lights, blurred vision and other visual disturbances. Not saying it is that as it's rare but there are all sorts of weird things that covid can trigger within your body.

CoteDAzur · 08/02/2024 15:53

That doesn't sound like regular Covid. I would worry about meningitis.

DrCoconut · 08/02/2024 16:02

My DS started with a hacking cough and being generally unwell. He is in hospital recovering from pneumonia now. There is something awful new Covid variant going around.

Absolutely45 · 08/02/2024 16:03

Weird symptoms for sure.
Personally wouldn't go and see a GP until you re negative

Biggest thing for me since Covid is almost dementia type symptoms, yesterday i put the oven gloves on and headed over to the Fridge to take out the roast chicken, i go into rooms and then can't remember why, turn laptop on and stare blankly at it wondering why!!!

But i ve got a stiff neck and sometimes see things in my peripheral vision, almost like someone is there.

However all of this is easing along with the fatigue too.

the new variant is JN-1 supposed to be a milder vision..... mmmmmmm.

sprigatito · 08/02/2024 16:48

Ok I'll ring 111 again. DS2 has been given antibiotics and an inhaler, so hopefully he'll be on the mend soon. Never seen him so ill, and haven't had any illness as weird and debilitating as this myself either.

Thanks for the replies Flowers

I had abdominal pain and diarrhea with my recent bout of Covid, but apart from that nothing much symptom wise. In your case I'd definitely be worried by the burning chest pain and breathlessness and think you need some medical attention.

You described the brain thing the best I've seen OP- I had a ton of neurological shit post covid (and post vaccine- they were very close) the first thing though out the blue was that weird blurry brain squeeze thing- I felt like I was about to feint and was a bit 'faraway' and it lasted about 20 minutes a time- several times a day. I also got back of the head type migraines for hours and a stiff neck and sore eyes and weird internal buzzing in feet and the odd finger plus pins and needles in feet - it gradually all faded over about 8 months but I still have flare ups now and then- it completely did a number on my nervous system- had multiple bloods, saw neurologist etc- apparently it's very very common- it's also very very frightening as it manifests not dissimilar to MS !!

That is phenomenally reassuring, thank you - I was beginning to worry I had something other than Covid going on! It's bloody horrible. Sorry you've had to suffer it too. I'm terrified of getting long covid, I had ME and fibro when I was younger and it was miserable.

I caught covid before Christmas and yes, I had horrible stabbing stomach pains, really horrible they were. The breathlessness and utter exhaustion as well.

Some of your other symptoms are a bit more of a concern though, particularly the stiff neck, which can be one of the symptoms of meningitis. That, with the pains in your head and visual disturbances means I think you should go back to 111 again. Did you tell them about the stiff neck the first time? Make sure they know the GP receptionist turned you away.

It is possible to have covid and something else at the same time.

@sprigatito def go to doctor -it's likely they will at least do full blood panel which is good and I would also do opticians too as they can see back of your eye- I paid £240 to see neurologist privately too - and she went through a series of actions with me- and explained why MS was unlikely on me the way it presented. My age was part of that as apparently in older people and I was61 at the time it tends to present differently - and more rarely
