Tell me at one or two small thing you've done to make your life easier

I've done 2 this year

  1. I've unsubscribed / marked as spam from nearly all my mailing lists. Now my inbox is an oasis of calm and I don't spend what feels like hours every week wading through emails I don't want My spam file is brimming over!
  2. I found a sharpie and (once I was sure they were the right way round!) labelled my double fitted sheets with side and top - wish I'd done this years ago not having to shuffle them about trying to work out which way up they go

WhatsApp group with DH for each DC medicines pinned whenever they get poorly is so helpful.

Any craft is either done on big roll of brown paper or A6 cards to turn into wrapping paper or gift cards.

Anglo doorstop charity collections booked every couple of weeks force me to continuously get rid of stuff - https://anglodoorstepcollections.co.uk/

Booked a collection, thank you! Trying to find a local charity shop with parking nearby is almost impossible!

SaltBlossom · 10/02/2024 17:29

I have given myself permission to just run the dishwasher when it's ready, instead of waiting until overnight.

BeyondMyWits · 10/02/2024 17:29

Kids doing exams need a clear colourless pencil case. Don't leave it til exam season to buy one.

I have photographed all my clothes, shoes and jewellery and organised them on Pinterest boards so I can sit in bed in the morning with a cup of tea scrolling through to decide what to wear.

What an incredible idea!

Not sure I'd even be organised enough to set it up but I'd definitely use it!

SausageRollsWithMustard · 10/02/2024 17:31

We also have tge huge Kirkland roll of foil, and also clingfilm and parchment paper. They're fab.

Poppysmom22 · 10/02/2024 17:31

We’ve gone from a king size duvet to two singles and it’s life changing

SausageRollsWithMustard · 10/02/2024 17:33

Of course the biggest thing we've done to make our lives easier is not to have children. 😂

Skyview7 · 10/02/2024 17:33

Eliminating the words 'should' and 'ought' from my vocabulary.
Doing this altered the entire course of my life; it cost me nothing but proved that the acquisition of wisdom makes you far richer than gold ever could.

SausageRollsWithMustard · 10/02/2024 17:33

(It is a bit drastic though)

Please tell me how you did this because I find it impossible.

My New Year's resolution this year was to lay out my clothes for work the night before. Saves me so much thought in the mornings

I do this too. Makes such a difference in the morning.

I don't watch the tv news or listen to it on the radio and I switch off current affairs programmes.

My stress levels are so much better than before. I can't do anything about wars or climate change, or terrorism, or political shenanigans, so what's the point in getting stressed out over it.

As the old saying goes - what they eye don't see, the heart don't grieve over.

I do this too. My stress levels are much lower as a result.

We always used a clear ziplock freezer bag!

Caroparo52 · 10/02/2024 17:49

We have a drawer called The Passport Drawer which also includes birth certificates, divorce certificates. No hunting for the important stuff.
Also I keep an A4 giant folder called Important Stuff. So when I pop my clogs all the stuff they will need to know is there in one place. Updated regularly. Doesn't phase me one bit to prepare for the inevitable. In fact it's reassuring to be so organised.
Bank accounts, pension, stocks and shares, Will, Solicitor, Deeds to house , etc.
My father did this for us and it helped immensely at the time of his passing for which I was very grateful.

Excellent thread OP! Here's mine -

Do a bulk order of gorgeous cards early January from Whistlefish so they work out £1 each then at the end of a month get all cards written for the next month with a post date on the back bottom corner of envelope so they go out on time

Like a pp keep a list on my phone if gifts we've been giving to avoid duplication

Also on my phone keep a note of what I have stored in my various huge bags in the loft. That way when I send DH up to get something I can direct him to the right place. Although currently all our lift contents are stored all over the house having had to empty it at the start of this year having discovered we have a fucking rat. And it's still not gone despite x 2 pest control bods being called in and it's entry point blocked in. Waiting for the bugger to die and it's horrible. Just want my bloody loft back. Anyway I digress, apologies

Passports - strip of washi tape on the back with our first name sharpied on. Much easier to match up with boarding cards

Shall think of more ...

How many cards are you writing that this saves time? Stunned.

Please could you explain what you mean?

Do you mean that whereas before you might think "I should really clean the carpet" that instead of thinking or saying that you just do it - eliminating the should?

Or something else? like personal stuff if you are thinking "I should lose weight" that you try to not thinking it and eliminate the should that way?

I do this but how do you add tick boxes?

On iPhone, it’s here

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 10/02/2024 17:57

I don’t overthink any of this stuff. If it doesn’t get done then it doesn’t get done 🤷‍♀️

JodieFostersFurHood · 10/02/2024 17:58

I have the fireproof bag that has everything important in it - certificates, financials, policies etc. My husband has one too.

JodieFostersFurHood · 10/02/2024 17:59

There's some great ideas here but some are verging on the opposite of the title - the lengths that some people go to organise themselves!

twopencepetula · 10/02/2024 18:00

@GroClock @LenaLamont @Stoufer @Ponderingtosk

Labelmaker recommenders - please could you tell me a bit about what sort of things you mainly use it for (I've seen freezer/fridge but what else?) and whether anything annoys you about your label maker/what should a buyer look for.

I've seen ones that print onto thin strips and ones that print on to bigger more rectangular labels - which is better?

Wiseoldbird51 · 10/02/2024 18:01

Fold up washing when you take it out and leave to “rest” for a few hours before hanging up avoids most of the ironing. All underwear straight in td for 20 mins. Jeans given 10 mins in tumble dryer when dry never need ironing.
make 2 meals from pack of mince cottage pie/chilli/spag bog always one in hand.
Peel and cook too many potatoes, nice to have some ready to sauté.
Put clothes in tumble dryer for few minutes in cold morning b4 deicing the car.

barkymcbark · 10/02/2024 18:09

I bulk buy Christmas cards, birthday cards and cards with nothing on the inside

I also buy smellies, gift sets etc from boots in the sale just after Christmas, so when I need a gift for a friend or my dd needs something for her friends we’ve always got something in the house

Crashmaya · 10/02/2024 18:10

I do a weekly meal plan on a Sunday. Go that day and buy what I need for the week (sometimes nip out mid week for fresh stuff, like meat or salad) so if I'm not home in time to make the evening meal my dh can crack on with it as all he needs is there!

We also have our own duvets. We sleep in a super king size bed and each have a double duvet. He's always cold and I'm always hot so works well for us both and means we can get a decent sleep.

I also have a stock of gifts so always have something in the house along with wrapping paper and/or gift bags and blank cards.
