Help please - central London taxi journey

5 of us need to get from London Victoria to Drury lane (covent garden) tomorrow evening. Should arrive at Victoria at 5.45pm so slap bang in rush hour.
I'd planned to get the tube but my elderly mum is having some health issues at the moment and needs to stop every 50/100 yards to catch her breath. So plan B is to get a cab.
However, living out in the sticks I've never done this before - can any of you kind lot tell me (a) how long the journey is likely to take at that time of day and (b) rough cost as I haven't a clue.
Thank you

Download Uber and put in the two travel points you should get an estimate for Uber.
You can also check the website rometorio.

I do half of that journey on the regular and it could take 30 mins if the traffic is bad. No idea how much but in a black cab I'd expect 30 min journey to be £25.

Moodicum · 07/02/2024 18:31

Jump on a bus it’s only 20 mins and the bus station is right outside the train station so not far to walk. There’s loads that go that route. Look on Google maps/ city mapper.

PatriciaHolm · 07/02/2024 18:32

Freenow app (Black cabs) reckons about 30mins and £17-£25.

Zippedydoodahday · 07/02/2024 18:33

If you book assistance for the reason journey online you can request to be met by a buggy and they'll drive your mum to the taxi rank. I reckon 20 to 30 mins in a cab.

TraitorsGate · 07/02/2024 18:34

It's always rush hour, I would just jump in a black cab, they seat 5 and there are ranks outside the station, the front and side entrances, do you know which platform you will arrive at. I'd allow 30mins to get thru the traffic, park, it may not take that long. Price £15 to £20. You can book cabs in advance but if you don't know the area you might not find the right exit. There are buses outside the main entrance too but you'd have to walk a bit to the actual theatre.

sorryiasked · 07/02/2024 18:38

Thanks all that's so helpful.
We've got nearly an hour to get there so 30 mins is fine.
I did look at the bus but it's either 20 mins + 5min walk or 35 mins, and I thought they would be packed too.

If you get a cab get a black one. More expensive (much) but they can use bus lanes etc so will be much quicker

Moodicum · 07/02/2024 21:12

I don’t know for sure but I wouldn’t imagine the buses will be packed on that route. Most people at the end of the day are headed toward the main train stations not away

we use uber when we visit London it's the easiest way to get around. I'm disabled so it was so handy for me not having to use the tube all the time.

Did this the other day as late to get to matinee. Black cab from front of Victoria station, no queue luckily, took us 30 minutes. It’s a 5 minute walk from platforms. Assistance might be a good idea depending on the platform.

this was 2pm I. The afternoon. Get a black cab. It was £20.

BarrelOfOtters · 07/02/2024 21:17

Not sure where uber picks up at Victoria I’d get a black cab.

bryceQ · 07/02/2024 21:21

Max £25 I'd say it's not that far. Get black cab as they can use bus lanes and more comfortable than an uber

parietal · 07/02/2024 21:57

Get a black cab - much easier than Uber for a large group and for pickup from a big station

gettingalife82 · 07/02/2024 22:08

Black cab will be easiest and fastest, though not cheapest. I'd do that if you don't mind paying about £30. You can just head to the taxi rank at Victoria.

On the way back you can hail one in the West End or use the Gett app to book one whilst you're still in the theatre / pub or whatever.

Ubers aren't allowed to pull over in taxi ranks or too close to the station and generally pull over on a yellow line somewhere further around the corner - so your elderly relatives might struggle with that.

We tried to get an Uber from Victoria a couple of. I the back it kept cancelling our order. And it was hard to know where it was waiting.

I'd get a black cab it's much easier to get to the taxi rank

GimmeGin · 07/02/2024 22:34

Get a black cab. Their drivers/fares are regulated and licensed.

uber can charge surge prices when busy. Not necessarily a cheaper option.

sorryiasked · 07/02/2024 22:36

Thanks all. Black cab it is.

Loads of black cabs directly outside Victoria station. Easy

sorryiasked · 09/02/2024 08:25

Just wanted to say thanks - cabs worked perfectly, 25 mins and £18.
Will definitely do that again in future.
