Ear wax removal

Does anyone have any ear wax removal tips? My DC aged 7 has wax build up and can’t hear out one ear. Been to doctors twice since start of January and they keep giving drops which have been useless, they say they won’t syringe kids under 16. I am desperate, any wax removal tips?

I've heard abut candles, but I haven't done it personally

Woo woo and dangerous

Do not use these OP
Especially on a child
Dangerous at worst, damaging at best

I just had a blocked ear and it was because of Otex, so be careful.

The guidance is to put a few drops in, tilt your head and then let it drain out. What can happen is the wax can dissolve and settle on the eardrum when your head is tilted to keep the drops in the ear. Then it can be very hard to get out again- I was deaf for three weeks and had to get it suctioned.

The doctor recommended bicarbonate, but this can irritate the ear with prolonged get use. Olive oil is safer (and cheaper), but warm water from a bulb is just as effective.

With the olive oil- I'm assuming you put the olive oil into the offending blocked ear- and keep that one up to the ceiling...how long to stay still for? And really....really put a lot in to fill up the hole?

Don't

You need to be doing the drops 3x a day every day for 2 wks. Most never actually do it enough to make it effective

Thank you everyone!! I called specsavers but they don’t do it on under 18’s for insurance reasons. Found a private clinic and have an appointment on Friday. Will see if I can get a picture of the wax that comes out

Make sure you commit to the 3x a day for 2wks before the appt else it's likely to be too hard to work effectively. Back when the practice i worked at offered it, we would just turn away if hadn't done it as a can cause trauma trying to remove rock hard wax

I’m the opposite. The audiologist told me not to use olive oil, before I go, as she said my earwax is so sticky, it’s like trying to dig out honey. Microsuction doesn’t get it all out, and they won’t get the wax off the eardrum itself. They found syringing worked better!

Yes the oil made my wax worse

Interesting about the micro suction but that's what the procedure is on the NHS and I'm so thankful I qualify
