Looking for a new ‘home based’ hobby

I have several hobbies outside of the home (walking, book club, gym classes, theatre, cinema etc)

I’m looking for something to do at home, different to things I already do or have done in the past.

I’d be interested in your hobbies that you think might appeal to me. I’m trying to give as much information as possible, will add anything I’ve forgotten in response to any suggestions.

Criteria:
Can’t take a lot of space
Something you can easily ‘pick up and put down’ but equally can fill more time when you have it (eg knitting - not a lot of prep, can pick up and do a few rows or spend a few hours; don’t want it to be something that takes a huge amount of prep and a lot of clearing away).

I can knit but have done that for years so not new. Am considering learning how to crochet.

I usually have a jigsaw on the go - a legacy from lockdown and still enjoy it.

I already enjoy cooking and baking & experimenting with new things so probably not food related.

I spend a little time each day doing puzzle (wordle, sudoku, code words etc)

Am using Duolingo to brush up on a couple of languages but don’t have the capacity to learn a new one from scratch.

I enjoy crafts (eg card making), but drawing and painting don’t appeal to me I did try paper cutting and quilling after they were suggested on someone else's similar thread a while back but didn't get on with them. Y

I used to do embroidery and tapestry but these no longer appeal to me either.

Don’t enjoy dressmaking, although have enjoyed making things like cushion covers.

I have upcyled some furniture, but would do that as and when I need something.

It could be something ongoing or just a one off mini project.

Please share your home based hobbies that seem to fit the bill - or just ideas that spring to mind reading the above even if not something you do yourself. Thank you

I do freestyle crochet, so you don’t need a pattern ( you sew up the bits at the end) I have a vast stash of wool and cotton etc, so I am working my way through it. As you do single motifs at a time, the actual work bag can be small enough to go on the sofa without taking up too much space.

Since it’s freestyle you don’t have to count, can do whilst tv watching etc….it’s very satisfying.

I spend a lot of time sitting on chairs in hospitals with DH, I have several Corinne Lapierre felt kits on the go,I cut the felt at home, then everything gets put in a small zip purse with a tiny pair of scissors, I’m currently making the needle case, I’ve made lots of the 12 days of Christmas decorations.

for Christmas I received a ‘hoop’ picture scene and I’ve managed to make that transportable too.

I’ve a few of her books too and often buy her lovely quality felt packs to make other things too.

although these are embroidered as they make a 3D object I look at them differently to say a cross stitch picture.

Definitely crochet! I’ve discovered mosaic crochet which is super simple but you can make some really beautiful things. Plus, you could join the knit, crochet and batter threads 🙂

Crochet. I love it. I picked it up when looking for a sitting down based hobby when pregnant and it's great. I've mainly made little toy animals so far and so it goes in a small makeup bag in my handbag and I can do it anywhere.

English paper piecing hand sewing quilting. It's just sewing scraps of fabric around paper shapes then sewing them together into a sheet and then quilting.

MuddlingThroughLife · 05/02/2024 19:43

Sounds dull but I enjoy diamond art. I don't do anything with the pictures, I just enjoy making them!

Crochet. I started doing blankets from attic 24 which is sold at the wool warehouse. These are really easy to do and she does some lovely kits. Janie crow also has some great kits but a bit more advanced, there are lots of tutorials if you fancy a challenge.

Paper Quilling . Papers need to be stored carefully but rest of stuff doesn’t take up much room and is cheap hobby.
have a look at pintrest
can get a bit addictive with coiling when you’re in middle of a project

look at modern art stuff on line - not just the traditional pretty flowers etc

Foreverexhausted1 · 05/02/2024 21:17

Another vote for crochet, I started about 10 years ago when I needed something to do during fibromyalgia flare ups, it needed to be something I could leave and return to but turned into so much more, its my relaxation now, I hate sitting down in the evening without it, I keep a small project in the car in case I'm stuck in it, I bring it caravanning and camping, it's like a form of meditation but depending on what your making you may have to really concentrate or you can do it with the light off. I'd highly recommend trying it.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/02/2024 00:09

Goldwork embroidery, genealogy, courses.

I've got some paint by numbers canvases. I ordered them from an advertisement on Fb and you could upload your own photo, so I have 2 ready to go. I've opened the pack and they supply 5 different sized brushes and little tubs you number to match the number on the canvas. It is slightly more detailed than I expected, so I haven't plucked up the courage to start just yet. I think I will be engrossed once I start so making sure I have some proper time to dedicate!
