Do you work in a Sandwich factory?

Can someone explain why it's so hard to find a takeaway cheese and tomato sandwich?
I sometimes see them in a triple- where are the other halfs?

Everything has mayo on it now as well. Ruins it.

DottyPencil · 05/02/2024 20:16

You have to put so much salted butter on that it waterproofs the bread.
Delicious

I used to work in a bakery in my teens. We used to make fresh crusty rolls with traditional simple fillings. I only remember the cheese and tomato ones! We always used to sell out and the bakery did well as a business. Bakeries round here now just go for wank "artisan" bollocks and charge a small fortune 😥

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 20:42

I cant eat bread now, but I crave a crusty roll that has gone soft on top by way of being wrapped in clingfilm, butter, thick, grated cheese and either pickle or tomato. Wrapped in clingfilm to make the top soft, sat for at least half a day, then eaten by squishing it down hard.

That is what is a good roll. I miss that.

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 20:42

Never kept in the fridge by the way

Mumsfishnets · 05/02/2024 21:13

You've brought back memories of my childhood car journeys! The choices were cheese and tomato or marmite and lettuce...

I think I'm going to bring them back. Love a pickle but only on a cracker. Too much in a sandwich! Tomato is the only suitable accompaniment for cheese.

Did once work in a sandwich shop but can't help I'm afraid!

hexsnidgett · 05/02/2024 21:16

Pickle and salad is just wrong.

My first sandwich post birth was brie and tomato in a french stick with lots of pepper ( the ground sort) made for me by DH

HoneyButterPopcorn · 05/02/2024 23:12

Mine was a Brie baguette too (Pret)! First thing the hospital gave me was rice pudding (which was the best thing I ever ate).

spandauballroom · 06/02/2024 00:49

I watched an amazing tiktok with all the wrong commentary about this earlier

Ilikedoughnuts · 06/02/2024 00:51

No however I do work in a factory that produces the main element of a sandwich, and honestly the issues you raised probably originate our end, every end product looks like it has been sat on or bites taken out of it.

Ilovegoldies · 06/02/2024 04:39

Am I the only person who likes a soggy sandwich? Tomato soggy. 🍅
I really dislike prepacked sandwiches they seem to all taste the same regardless of filling. As a PP said everything comes with mayo too. Perhaps that's what makes them taste identical.

soupfiend · 06/02/2024 06:20

Pre packed sandwiches taste of cold. Thats all they taste of. Cold

Jifmicroliquid · 06/02/2024 07:00

I love cheese and tomato sandwiches and get so frustrated that I can only find 1 as part of a triple pack of other sandwiches (looking at you, Tesco)

Getabloominmoveon · 06/02/2024 07:02

Mayo, mayo everywhere. And not even nice mayo. What happened to butter? I would love to be able to buy a simple chicken salad sandwich on brown bread with butter. Or similar with prawns. (Yes, I need to make my own of course..) Thank God for Pret’s little Jambon Beurre crusty roll!

I want a foil wrapped cheese and tomato sandwich that's been sat in the back window of the car for hours.

😂 nostalgia! 😂

morningafterglow · 06/02/2024 07:15

It's cos of that awful soggy tomato taste. I love cheese and tomato sandwiches but I only ever have them freshly made either by me or deli style where you see the sandwich made fresh. I won't even make myself one in a packed lunch. I'm sure there is a scientific reason for this but the taste tomato gets after any longer than about an hour between bread is grim and taints the whole sandwich. Even ploughman's has this issue.

So I go for cheese and pickle or egg/tuna mayo which all stay fresh.

HRTQueen · 06/02/2024 07:15

I don’t know but wouldn’t have thought it was that popular as it would go soggy

I love the cheap cheese and onion that most shops have toasted (in one of those toastie bags as it’s messy) thought I would share this delight

I love a fresh ripe tomato in a homemade sandwich. But tomatoes in shop-bought sandwiches are under-ripe tasteless and generally unpleasant. If I find one, in the bin it goes.

i was thinking that same. I love a tomato but only in a deli sandwich, not one that’s been chilled. Never put a tomato on the fridge, kills the flavour.

Saucery · 06/02/2024 07:25

Best cheese and tomato sandwich I ever had was in a pub on the outskirts of Bath. I still have dreams about it, it was that good.

Lol at prepacked sandwiches tasting of Cold. They do!

SidekickSylvia · 06/02/2024 07:42

My favourite sandwich is white bread, butter, ham. That's it. I don't want mayo, mustard, salad or anything else with it, just a plain ham sandwich with white bread. I haven't seen one on a supermarket or petrol station shelf for years.

There was another thread recently about simple old fashioned foods that we miss, and a few posters mentioned sandwiches. Why did they all get so fancy?!

😆😆 That is so true!

therealcookiemonster · 06/02/2024 08:01

the only factory my sandwiches come from are my kitchen where I assemble home grown tomatoes, home made cheese and left over chicken from the chicken of the week to make a massive mumsnet salad. because as a real woman, I obviously don't eat carbs.

you should try it OP.
