Wedding - you have to pick 3 songs

In need of some major inspiration please 😅 DP and I are getting married fairly soon. Very intimate ceremony. I need music to play as we walk in, sign the register, walk out etc.

We don’t really have “our song” or anything. DP isn’t particularly big on music. I love all different kinds of music but don’t really have anything that I need to have at my wedding 😅

Give me some inspiration - if you had to pick 3 songs to have played during your ceremony, what would they be 😊

We had:

Walking in: Air on G (Bach)

Signing the register: Forever (Ben Harper)

Walking out: instrumental version of Design for Life (Stealth Sonic Orchestra remix) (Manic Street Preachers)

I could have written this post myself! We're getting married in November in a small registry office and also need to choose 3 songs but have no romantic songs that we both like! Mainly my fault because of my taste in music (HipHop/Rap - don't think Snoop Dogg is wedding appropriate! 😅) so like you am really struggling!

We've so far come up with Whitney Houston - Higher Love and the slowed down version of Sam Smith - Latch but we're really struggling for a 3rd!

@Mermaidsarereal Aww nice! Maybe you’ll get inspiration for a 3rd song here 😊

I love the acoustic version of Latch but DP hates Sam Smiths voice 🙄😂

I walked down the aisle to Elvis " I can't help falling in love with you"

Signed the register to Shania Twain "You're still the one" (took us 16 years to actually get married, so appropriate)

We walked out to Queen "You're my Best Friend"

@BiPolarBabe its taken us 14 years so we’re not that much faster that you 😅

Kodaline have a beautiful cover of Latch for anyone wanting a non Sam Smith version

mitogoshi · 06/02/2024 16:47

I've just picked all of mine but I don't think you can have religious music at civil ceremonies.

I'm having, all performed live

In: Jesu joy of mans desiring, arrangement for organ and violin

3 hymns

Signing: the Lord bless you and keep you, Rutter (choir)
Love's Philosophy (solo)
Cantique de Jean Racine (choir)

Out: Sing (for choir based on Windor)

Occupational hazard picking full on music!

I thought of 'The Man Who' by Super Furry Animals, and imagined the registrar's face or indeed any older person at the ceremony!

Sorry to offer nothing, have a lovely day, hope one of the suggestions works.

Mermaidsarereal · 06/02/2024 17:54

My partner hates Sam Smith too but is too lazy to do any wedding planning so its tough for him! 😜

sweatervest · 06/02/2024 18:09

the dan band: total eclipse
the killers: the man
primadonna: the struts

For my fantasy wedding I'd walk in to 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do'
In the ceremony before the vows 'Pure and Simple'
On the way out 'A Million Dreams'
First dance 'Sunshine on Leith'

Sodie · 06/02/2024 19:09

I’m a wedding registrar and we normally ask people to pick 3 pieces of music. What couples don’t often realise is:

  1. the ‘walk’ in (if you are doing a bridal entrance or whatever) is usually not as long as you think it is. If it’s in a registry office, it’s usually just a few feet. So don’t worry about it too much.
  2. the music for the signing- signing normally takes around 2-3 mins. It’s much quicker than people think. some people choose not to have any music for this part.
  3. the music for the exit is just as quick as the entrance.

therefore, if it’s stressing you out, you could just use the same piece of music for all three bits.

thecatsthecats · 06/02/2024 20:32

We had Gangstas Paradise for the signing of the register. Private joke that got out of hand, but it was brilliant seeing the confusion on people's faces.

@kardashianklone Thank you! This is helpful 😊 I did say to DP that I couldn’t imagine needing very much music but he was adamant they’d play out the full songs 😅
Out of interest - can you tell us roughly how long the ceremony/signing lasts (basic ceremony with no additional readings etc)?

I would have
Fly me to the moon Frank Sinatra
I melt -Rascall Flats
At last Etta James

Dh would likely object to. I melt but it contains my all time favourite lyric. (This burn in me is the coolest thing I've ever felt)

TheDandyLion · 07/02/2024 08:15

Walked in to Underworld by Born Slippy. It faded out before the thumping techno kicked in.
Signed the book to Bjork All is full of Love.
Walked out to Groove Armada At The River.

@Inyourwildestdreams

The quickest I can do a basic wedding (if for example, the couple has requested it to be quick, or they are running late or whatever) is 8 mins. That's no readings, no personal vows, no ring exchange, just in, do legal vows, legal bits, legal signing done. I did one of those the other day when the couple was half an hour late to their own wedding. For couples who are having a religious wedding elsewhere, they usually just want a very quick legal wedding, and the 'basic BASIC' wedding in that case is about 5 mins. Say some words, witnesses and couple sign a marriage schedule, leave.

A 'normal' basic wedding with no extra bits, but the legal vows/signing and ring exchange is really about 10-15 mins. Depends on what script the couple chooses. If its a long flowery one with extra paragraphs about what marriage means, it adds a couple of mins.

A good rule of thumb is everything all in, even WITH readings and personal vows, is done and dusted within 20 mins.

I would be surprised if you get to play 3 whole songs, usually it's a bit awkward if the walk in is done, the signing is done, and people are just sitting there waiting for music to end. I would usually signal to whoever is in charge of the music to wrap it up. Some people get a bit precious about 'which bit of the song they want to walk in to', and I think quite often they have envisaged themselves sweeping up a long church aisle to a particular chorus, but have forgotten they've booked a small room in the registry office and actually its only 6 steps from the door to the end.
