Argh. DS, 5 and his builders bum!

DS is a fairly skinny 5 yo. He has elasticated waist slim fit M&S school trousers. Ever since he started in reception, he always has a builders bum when he bends over or reaches his arms in the air.

Even though the 4-5 trousers still fitted him in waist and length, we bought the 5-6 ones in the hope they would have a higher waistband but we are still having the same issues.

They aren't particularly loose around the waist, I could tighten the elastic a bit further but it would make them very difficult for him to pull up and down for going to the loo.

We tried a few before he started school and chose M&S for the slim fit as they fit better (while standing!).

I'm at a bit of a loss as what to do really. Does he have a particularly high waist (not that he really has a waist). Is this a problem for anyone else?! Longer polo shirts would drown him.

Braces!

Can you get better fitting pants at least so you only see his pants.

Can he wear a vest or something that's tucked into his trousers?

This happens to lots of children in school uniform! I’d make him wear boxers that come up quite high because then he’s more likely to show the waistband than his bum.

My eldest is very slim and has always needed the trouser elasticated waists pulled in a lot. We found Sainsbury's Tu school trousers better for fit than M&S. Also agree with @TinyYellow about wearing trunks or boxers rather than briefs as the wider elastic waistband is less likely to slip down

John Lewis used todo a slightly fancier range that came up really slim on the waist. They’ve got the adjusters on the outside.

these ones but only from age 8 up I think.

You can get slim fit polos too, which allow a slightly longer length without masses of extra fabric.

Thanks everyone, we might try different pants. Sometimes his briefs stay in place but more often than not, the trousers take them down with them.

He already has slim fit polos ☹️

I'll look again at the Saisnbury's trousers.

The only other thing I can think of is to try and get him into non elasticated waists sooner rather than later.
