How to make my house smell nice?

I have two reed diffusers that smell lovely (in fact, changed my name to the name of them). All our washing is done in Fairy and we clean the house often and try open the windows every day, but I just don’t think our house smells of anything. You know how sometimes you can go to someone else’s house and think it smells really lovely? I just don’t notice it in my own and don’t know how to achieve it. I use the M&S Apothecary candles too in the lounge which smell a bit spa like, think bergamot and eucalyptus, cedarwood those kinds of scents.

What do you do to make your house smell nice, if visitors have complimented you on it? :)

I always find that home made baked goods like cakes or a really delicious how made meal make the place smell lovely for several days at least. Keeping it clean makes it smell nice and fresh too.

Plug ins

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 04/02/2024 18:09

I just like the smell of clean, rather than artificial scents. Windows opened every day, rooms dusted and hoovered well, curtains and other textiles laundered regularly. Fresh flowers can be lovely. But nothing adding a scent.

Apparently washing your walls, steam cleaning or laundering soft furnishings, either no pets or pets that are washed frequently, everyone in the house clean ie shoes deodorised and cleaned. Drains cleaned weekly, no stinky cheese in the fridge, bins washed weekly at least, bedding washed weekly at least, curtains washed every couple of months, no smokers or vapers, no smelly beauty treatmenys,no smelly foods, hood humidity control, no stinky road or neighbours.

Djde8uwje9djxyjs · 04/02/2024 18:20

The people who had naturally good smelling home they cleaned and washes absolutely everything in their home was sparkling clean, the washing machine was serviced regularly, the carpet steam cleaned regularly.. everything is regularly deeply cleaned.

Beebumble2 · 04/02/2024 18:40

Flowers add a natural scent to homes, even cheap daffodils have a lovely scent. At this time of year they’re a £1 a bunch, I but 3 bunches, put them in a large vase and they give a striking display.

Wooden floorboards smell lovely when warmed by sun. Beeswax polished furniture. Inspiritus candle by St Eval. Fresh air exchanged in each room daily. Laundry dried outside when fine. Fresh flowers with water changed regularly. Bins washed out.

PegasusReturns · 04/02/2024 18:52

Everything laundered regularly

soft furnishings including carpets professionally cleaned at least every 6mths

windows opened daily

neom diffuser pods and oils. Just a hint.

fresh flowers in most rooms

I've found getting my carpets shampooed professionally once in a while makes a huge difference as well as washing curtains and cushiom covers regularly. The other thing I really like is a nice furniture polish, it lingers, if you like that sort of thing. Not a fan of plugins they always smell sugary to me

Guavafish1 · 04/02/2024 18:59

Every house has a unique smells.

But once you've stayed in the house for a while, you adapt and the smell drifts into the back ground unless very powerful or poignant.

As other have said, regular cleaning and airing of the house makes it smell more fresh.

Definitely open windows, i also use Apothecary reed diffusers and candles. Plus wax melts. I buy mine at the local garden centre.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 04/02/2024 22:10

It's quite a subjective thing. We booked a holiday home that had those reed things all over and had to find a cupboard to put them in. We couldn't stop sneezing. I can't bear pot pourri, scented laundry detergent or conditioner. MIL keeps buying us all Jo Malone stuff like soap and it's so heavily scented. Can't bear it. It's really awkward.

I love the scent of proper vanilla pods, a rosemary plant you can brush your fingers through, a bunch of mint or dried lavender. Woodsmoke, nice cheese or bread, Irish soda bread or a fruitcake. Heaven. Mostly because I can't bake for sh*t!

I love apothecary! I've got stacks of 'calm' I love that one

Fresh air and cleanliness is the main thing. Former is tricky somewhere like London, latter is totally achievable and easier the less clutter you have.

Janetime · 04/02/2024 22:18

I have two of these, although I got them for 40 quid less each in the sale. I adore them. I can’t use plug ins or air fresheners, as it gives me a headache, but these scenting oils don’t. I’ve one in the hall, which I keep on low, and one in the living room on about Medium, and every single person who comes in comments on how lovely the house smells. Last week the dude servicing the boiler said “oh is that where the smell is coming from, I was thinking how does it smell so nice in here “

ypu also get them from hotel collection and aroma 360, all pretty much the same, plus when you fill it up it lasts a few weeks, so you just switch it on from your phone and you don’t need to be messing around on the regular.

A few drops of fabulosa in a dish of hot steaming water, use this on dishcloth to wipe down all surfaces, refill the dish once I've cleaned to let the steam/smell fill the room. Open doors and windows to let fresh air in.
I use the blueberry sugar fabulosa at the minute, pour a full bottle into an old dettol bottle and top up with hot water, lasts a couple of weeks, I clean everything with it, hard surfaces and soft furnishings.

@Janetime the product you’ve posted about sounds really interesting. Which scent do you rate?

Fabulosa is disinfectant? No one should be thoroughly disinfecting their home or using it as an air freshener, that’s really unhealthy. Same as zoflora, it’s not something we should be doing,

Tokyo is my fave , I think it’s like jasmine with lemon etc, and I like Gaby as well. Do not like the frangipani and vanilla at all. …

NewKingontheBlock · 04/02/2024 22:42

The OP clearly keeps her house clean so she is not lacking on that front, what I think she is trying to achieve is that wonderful smell when you enter a lovely hotel or a spa, they basically pump the air with a perfume via an in built system IKEA even do it in their room sets, normal homes have to uses electric diffusers etc to create the same effect. I love a beautiful smelling home, I use the White Company Oils in their electric diffuser, at the moment I’m using ‘Fireside’ but will switch to something more spring like in March.

moderationincludingmoderation · 04/02/2024 22:47

The Purdy & Fig counter clean, but you can use it on everything. It's made with essential oils and the smells are so fresh and I find they really linger.
In winter I clean the radiators with it, and when the heating comes on the smell is dispersed again.
