You're buying your first home...what are the most useful things you never knew you needed?

I'm putting a box together for a family member and looking for ideas please

Torch + batteries
Vanish carpet cleaner

A gift voucher for a take away on their first night in the house as they’ll want to choose their own stuff.

or a box of cleaning products including those blue block thingies you put in the loo and bin bags and matches

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/02/2024 10:06

A couple of really good things, rather than lots of cheap things maybe?
Decent pegs
Good kitchen scissors
A nice vase
A couple of wine bottle stopper thingies
Good quality tea towels and dish cloths

Rather than matches I'd say a long lighter. And a refill can to go with!

The 'unsexy' things. Friends will get them some pretty mugs.

If this is a younger family member, I'd get them all the stuff you don't need to buy every week in your grocery shop, but you do need at some point, like toilet rolls, hand soap, toilet duck and those rim cleaner things and a toilet brush (unless they have the MN hatred for them Wink). Then things like salt, some basic spices, garlic etc, ketchup, cooking oil, a box of teabags and jar of coffee. Washing up liquid. (presuming you'd know if they don't drink coffee or if they love marmite or other specifics).

NewName24 · 05/02/2024 17:10

But does depend a bit - I think a lot of people buying their first house will have already lived away - perhaps as a student ? So will have some things already.

mitogoshi · 05/02/2024 17:10

Depends, if they have rented previously and now are buying, a b&q voucher is more useful as they'll have plenty of stuff

Sgtmajormummy · 05/02/2024 17:13

Electric screwdriver and bits.
Hex keys
Small hammer
Metal tape measure.

A good corkscrew🍷!

Sgtmajormummy · 05/02/2024 17:16

Personally I would give them a JosephJoseph mixing bowl set or as a joke a salad spinner (cheap but essential).

Ametora · 05/02/2024 17:16

Cash
Everything else risks being a duplication
I have owned many houses in the last 50 years and never owned some of the things on these lists! (including a toilet brush- sorry!)

aitchteeaitch · 05/02/2024 17:26

Freezer bags.
