Anyone around to keep me company whilst I wait for 111 to call back?

Woke about midnight after taking forever to get to sleep with searing head/ear pain and feeling like I was made of lava I was that warm but when I got up to get something to drink I felt very shivery and have since thrown up several times.

I've called 111 because well there's not much else you can do at 1am on a Sunday and am now waiting for a call back but inevitably I'm starting to feel tired. It's been about 1hr half since I called and they said I'd get a callback within two hours (I'm sceptical) so I could do with some company whilst I wait please if anyone's about?

If you've got kids could you take some Calpol instead. It mushy stay down better. 20ml of 6+ is the adult dose.

That's a great shout unfortunately we've got no calpol in. Sods bloody law.

I'm here to hand hold

Unfortunately fevers do feel both hot and cold at the same time. Drink plenty of liquids, if you have it try flat lemonade (pour a mug of it, and stir with a spoon). The sugar can help with nausea, and give you some energy. You can try a cool compress on your head, neck, armpits and groin. I personally find a shower helps, I adjust to a temperature that feels good, and it makes me feel cleaner if I've been sweating too.

Thank you.

I just tried to call back again and this time it just hung up on me. Sad My head literally feels like someone is splitting it in two and my ear feels like it's going to explode.

Does the nearby walk in centre open at 7am even on a Sunday? If so, I'd be very inclined to go there when it opens.

34weekmess · 04/02/2024 04:39

Just go a&e op if your head is that bad you need seeing asap

34weekmess · 04/02/2024 04:41

Don't want to worry you, but I looked after a man once who had an ear infection which turned into meningitis- fist sign was fever and uncontrollable shaking

It does seem to open at 7 so I'm definitely leaning to that option. They called back about 10 minutes ago I tried to answer and it cut the call off and they didn't try to call back so I've now got no idea if that's them done with me or not.

I'd really like to avoid a&e if possible hence why I called bloody 111 in the first place. Yes I'm in a lot of pain but sitting in a&e for hours isn't likely to get me seen quickly and honestly the thought of having to wear clothes when I already feel about 300 degrees sounds like a new level of torture.

I'm not medical, but I'd put money on it being a severe ear infection

LadyMargaretDevereux · 04/02/2024 04:53

Hi there, just joining in as I'm here and awake as well. I'm awake worrying about my friend who is in hospital and I can't get back to sleep. Hand hold for you op, hope you get it sorted soon.

Newchapterbeckons · 04/02/2024 04:56

I had a virus and Covid over Christmas and it was just as you describe. Awful. I still think it’s best to take advice if your headache is unbearable.

Mammma91 · 04/02/2024 05:03

Do you have any ice lollies OP? Could you try one of those to help hydrate you and up your sugar intake? Also - if you have any lemon at home it’s good to smell it helps the nausea. So sorry you’re feeling so unwell OP. I hope you get a call back soon to go be seen!

SuffolkUnicorn · 04/02/2024 05:05

Sounds like the severe ear infection I’ve had which has lasted over two years on and off hope you feel better soon op

SuffolkUnicorn · 04/02/2024 05:07

The migraines with my ear infection get so bad I can’t even open my eyes can’t see a thing constantly fainting falling over no balance when it’s really bad

PeopleAreWeird · 04/02/2024 05:12

A&E can give you IV paracetamol which is straight in the vain and will work good for pain and ur raging temperature

Thinking about this, can you put your chin on your chest?

Obviously I hoping you 'just' have an ear infection but a sign of meningitis is that you cannot put your chin on your chest.

FiveShelties · 04/02/2024 05:14

Could you suck an ice cube? Ear infections are awful and really painful, and always always seem to be at their worst in the middle of the night.

travelforthesoul · 04/02/2024 05:49

have been up a while and following your thread, I hope you have had a proper call back now and advice from medics.

Luckycloverz · 04/02/2024 05:53

Perhaps try warm hot water bottle against your head, or cold compress see which works better on your pain. Recent virus I had sounds like this and it took 3 weeks to get over, it's miserable.
It was mainly down to sinusitis too which needed a steroid spray to sort out but took just a couple of days to feel headache relief thankfully.

Whiskeypowers · 04/02/2024 06:34

That sounds miserable and scary for you too OP
hope you’ve now either received a phone call or are at least able to get something on your feet and wrapped up enough to get in the car to be at the WIC for 7am .

Acatdance · 04/02/2024 06:55

I'd get a callback within two hours (I'm sceptical)

I was told that and actually waited 15 hours. They eventually booked me an out of hours GP appointment at the hospital for the same day - which was two weeks quicker than my own GP could have seen me. I had an infected wound that was giving me a high temperature and was in agony with it.

Seabreeze18 · 04/02/2024 07:02

Hope you get seen soon

Ihavethis2 · 04/02/2024 07:20

Hope you get some help soon @WaitingForACallback Not sure about Sunday hours near you but didn’t they say Pharmacies can now give prescriptions for ear infections? If that’s what you have. Sounds like you need antibiotics?

WaitingForACallback · 04/02/2024 08:05

Sorry for seemingly abandoning you all.

I finally got another call back and dragged myself off to OOH. I've got an inner ear infection as many of you have predicted but OOH said they don't routinely recommend antibiotics and so I've been sent home with a prescription for anti sickness tablets and codeine.

Felt a lot like the doctor thought I was being over dramatic to quote him "it's something that happens a lot in children and will generally heal if left well alone".

Got some minor revenge though as despite telling him multiple times I'd been sick when taking tablets he gave me some codeine and I promptly threw up on his shoes ...Blush I've managed to keep the second lot off codeine down after having an anti sickness injection waiting a while and trying again.

Just about to head home now and hopefully I'll get some sleep. It's been a very long night but I can't tell you how much the messages have helped me in getting through it.

Aww it really sounds like you've had a hard time, nothing like a patronising doctor to make us feel better🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Hope you get home and get a good rest and the tablets start working very soon.
