DD 18th birthday present

Would a really good cashmere blanket be a shit present? I said this to my friend and she was 🤔 I thought about something like a Longines moonphase watch but DD doesn’t wear a
watch normally and she’s not really into anything flashy. I thought about a Brora cashmere cardigan but when I mentioned this to the same friend her eyebrows lifted so high they disappeared down the back of her neck.

It would be a lovely gift for someone older.

You know your child and whether it's something she would appreciate, we don't.
We got my son a kayak for his 18th, and went out for a meal. That wouldn't be everyone's idea of a great birthday present but he was happy.

Depends what your child likes.

My dd is 18 in a few weeks, she is severely autistic and I have no idea what to buy her because she doesn’t like what most 18 year olds like. I’m thinking of taking her somewhere, she really wants to go on a coach trip.

You know her best and if that’s what she would like then buy it for her.

GoodVibesHere · 03/02/2024 19:20

I can't imagine an 18yr old taking pleasure from a cashmere blanket or cardigan in the way an older person would. My teen DDs quite like a fleecey blanket in the winter but wouldn't care if it was cashmere, if that makes sense.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/02/2024 19:25

My DD is 18 this year. She love travel so have booked a city break and a show which she also enjoys. I might also buy some designer sunglasses or a piece of jewellery. She wouldn't 'get' cashmere blankets or cardigans, the concept would be lost on her.

Daisy12Maisie · 03/02/2024 20:13

I would love a cashmere blanket. I'm 41 though. Maybe a spa day and a necklace or something for your daughter?

Tulipvase · 03/02/2024 20:16

My daughter chose a bag. I quite like the idea of the blanket, does she love cosy stuff in general?

SKG231 · 03/02/2024 20:17

Cashmere blanket doesn’t scream happy 18th

an important piece of jewellery

a special trip somewhere

a spa day

a voucher for a fancy hairdressers

a lower cost designer handbag

it all depends what your daughter likes, you know her best.

Livinginanotherworld · 03/02/2024 20:17

I’d love a cashmere blanket, the perfect present…..for me, I’m in my 60’s.
How about a European city break just mum and daughter ?

AhBiscuits · 03/02/2024 20:18

Save it for her 50th.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/02/2024 20:20

My dd is turning 18 next week, her main present is a commissioned necklace which uses gold from her great grandmothers wedding ring....

I think a cashmere blanket is pretty rubbish but then you know your dd best 🤷‍♀️

Icantbedoingwithit · 03/02/2024 20:20

God no OP! She is 18!! Try @SKG231 List. Much better ideas.

DilemmaDelilah · 03/02/2024 21:48

I took my daughter to a silversmith to have a silver ring made. She chose the design and the stones so it was entirely personal for her. I didn't have much money so it was nice to be able to give her something so personal.

Garlicdoughball · 03/02/2024 22:57

Thanks all. This has been useful. I’ll give some more thought to jewellery. She’s into what her little sister describes as “granny chic” and is travelling with friends anyway this summer. However, I wanted to give her something she could keep that she’d increasingly appreciate as she got older - so loving it the most when she’s 60 would be ideal 😁
