Interesting article! I don't know most of these (I'm Australian) but immediately thought of that photo of Chamberlain when I saw your thread. Glad they mentioned the detail that Karsh took Churchill's cigar - his description is rather different from Life magazine's claim that he snatched it from Churchill's mouth!

The 2 that made be laugh out loud and cringe at the same time are the Ed Miliband picture and Theresa May dancing - too awful for words!

Thanks for posting this. I sometimes get a weekend Guardian, but didn't yesterday.. I love a good photo after the event, I love how some pictures become so iconic.

I don't know most of them and I work in UK politics! Blush some of them are really reaching though - I don't see how Sunak's is defining of his premiership.

But so interesting, thanks for sharing Op!

Iconic is the word - if people were asked to think of a famous photo associated with a politician, these would be there

The one with Blair and Bush is interesting. You can see the power from Bush as the US President.

I'm trying to think of others. Obviously the Guardian photographers have great knowledge than me, but i have studied photography in set, albeit with a leaning towards war photography. These two, taken a few hours apart, spring to mind.,

Photos that defined a politician - are your favourites here? There's Thatcher in a tank, Kinnock cheering, Blair and Bush ant The Portillo moment

I saw this article too. DS 17 is very interested in politics and could name every person - APART from Shirley Williams and Barbara Castle (which is very depressing).

I hadn't realised that the infamous OxfordBullington club photo could no longer be published - so the journalist Michael Crick commissioned an artist to paint it. Cunning!

I wonder if anyone has asked Johnson, Cameron and Osbourne why they think that photograph can't be published Grin

Really good piece, thanks for posting op. This one of Cameron hits the spot - the Tories have such contempt for other people's children (dangerous school buildings, teachers leaving in droves, 4.2 million children living in poverty, DoL funding crisis etc etc) and a little child sees right through his shiny-faced smarm.

Gummer feeding his daughter a beef burger would make my list.

Seeing the photo of Palmerston reminds me of a bit of trivia - Sir Robert Peel was the last Prime Minister of whom there are no photographs. Even Wellington had his photo taken, some time in the 1840s (long after his premiership, of course).

WobblyLondoner · 04/02/2024 10:22

This is the key one I remember of Thatcher, rather than her on the tank.

This is the key one I remember of Thatcher, rather than her on the tank.

That was a key moment in her political life.
