Just recommending - half an hour in and bliss!

(the book was too hard for me).

real actors, real characters, real scripts and not a Nicole Kidman in sight 😂

recommended so far :) ….

1940 is a lot of fun though! Bingley breaks a billiard table out of emotion! The carriage race at the start!

Nooo! That David Rintoul version is the worst! 🤣 The best adaptation by far is the Andrew Davies one who was himself a lover of the book. And the Colin Firth lake scene is just a bonus. 😍

I disagree. The Andrew Davis version is very pretty sugar-coated but a long way from the book in it's original rather waspish spirit. I'm sure you have read the original text, but I think that that text is pretty savage on many fronts. Yes, Firth is very handsome but that is not actually the point at issue in the original text. And the wet shirt is just cheap. The point that the book makes is that Darcy's servants say that he is a just and fair and kind employer. That - plus his vast wealth (Lizzie comes from an impoverished family) - is what makes him attractive.

The Colin Firth shirt was a joke. I read the book at least once a year so I'm familiar with the text. Andrew Davies comes closest to me considering screen adaptations exist to engage on a different level to reading so this hits both authenticity and entertainment perfectly. (Imo)

The 1940 version is shocking. Shifting the time period because they had some spare crinolines is bad enough, but the bit where Darcy conspires with Lady Catherine to say he'd lose his money if he married Lizzy to test whether she's a gold digger is unforgivable.

PudgeControlsTheWeather · 02/02/2024 20:06

YES! Changing it so that Lady Catherine's not just a snobby bitch after all, but was actually conspiring with her beloved nephew - how utterly weird! And Mr. Collins was about 70 - he's meant to be in his twenties, I thought!

And they made him a librarian. As a librarian, I find this unforgivable.

just a joke ??? So the whole POINT (or to be more accurate very very painful discussion) of the book is worth sabotaging for a pretty man in a wet shirt -as if late 29th cent audiences had not seen all that and much more explicit before? Let's subvert the whole message of the book in the name of popular audience viewing figures and call that a joke? OK......

Yikes! Have no idea what you're going on about @nameXname. It was MY joke. In my post.

I enjoyed the 1980 series at the time, but the 1995 is supreme to me. You'd have to pay me to watch the 1940 or 2005 films.

Thanks for letting us know OP! I was looking to see where I could watch it a few weeks ago and couldn’t find it anywhere. Am now watching it and loving it. Thanks again!
