Hello!!

So my question is, I'm 30 and all my life I've been bleached blonde. I've allowed it to grow out a lot so now I have my natural mousy colour and what looks like a blonde balayage. I want to focus on hair health this year. Anyway...I've invested in treatments at a hairdressers and she keeps telling me I should get highlights as it'll make me 'look younger' so my question is, should I stick with my natural colour and accept it ages me or should I take her advice and attempt to pretend I'm 29 for a bit longer 😂

Feel free to tell me you don't care that's totally fine I'm just pretending you're my friends and we are having a pointless chat over a cup of tea! 😂

I’ve got quite a mousy looking dark blonde hair. I’ve dyed it lots of colours but just sort of let it grow out now. It looks like a faded balayage but I’m kinda liking the more natural look. Also my hair feels so much better and has a more natural shine to it which I didn’t think was possible!
You could try leave it a little longer and see how you get on. You might find that you like the little bit of a change from colouring it.
You might hate it and want to add a different colour in too. I love my hair dresser and love the fact that she’s quite blunt so if something doesn’t suit me then she’ll say. She wouldn’t tell me to add in highlights though to make me look younger and I’m only a couple of years older than you.

Thank you so much! I totally agree with you! It's crazy how healthy and shiny natural hair looks compared to a life of blonde. Do you find that you've had to change shampoos? I tried this olaplex but I think now that my natural hair isn't damaged it's too moisturising!
Sorry if this is a boring conversation but I totally appreciate your message and I agree with you. It's a nice look!

She playing on your insecurities as a woman reaching a certain age. It guarantees bookings, and her wages!

I’ve never met anyone who didn’t already suit their natural hair colour, it goes perfectly with their skin tone, and what is wrong with looking your actual age?

Think what you could do with that money in your pocket, instead of in their till. Not to mention the endless hours you’d have to be in the chair for the upkeep of new highlights.

I say rock your natural look, it suits you!

Thank you! That's such a great answer. I didn't even think of it that way. You're right. I should be proud of the age I am and I should embrace my natural colour. Thank you so so much!

I was bleach blonde for decades and am now natural brunette. My hair colour is a very inoffensive but not very exciting brown colour and I love it. I LOVE not dying my hair or worrying about my roots or paying£££ for colour which will start to look a bit shit in two months. I love being a natural hair colour because as pp said, it’s suits me!

I live in an area of where most women with dark hair get highlights and they all look really so bad. I think unless you have an incredibly expensive hair colour with lots of different tones and keep it topped up all the time and cut and style regularly then highlights simply won’t look better than your natural hair colour.

A hairdresser also tried to convince me to get highlights saying I would look nicer. She was wrong, she just wanted my money.

stay your natural hair colour for a year or so and enjoy it and the spare money you have!

Imitationzone · 01/02/2024 23:04

I don’t think highlights make people look younger. A good haircut is far more important!!

TheSlantedOwl · 01/02/2024 23:06

Yeah ditch that hair stylist, she’s not giving you the best advice!

Your natural hair sounds lovely.

Yeah I changed shampoos, I don’t use any for coloured hair now. My hair is naturally fine so been using more of a treatment based on that.

I think your hairdresser just doesn’t want to lose you as a client as you’ve spent a lot of money over the years bleaching your hair. I’d ignore her highlights comment and try natural hair for a while.

Highlights cost lots of money don't they ? Of course she wants you to carry on having them . Keep growing it out and experiment with wash in and out colours .

Go natural, you’re beautiful the way you are
:)

Animatedapple · 02/02/2024 08:01

Agree with everyone above. Enjoy natural hair colour and spend your saved money on something that lasts longer

This!

Im growing out my grey at age 40. It’s quite liberating! I have good skin so I give it a lot of love and hope it takes away from my hair 😉

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 02/02/2024 08:07

I have similar hair that is dark blonde but lightens very easily and I have to be careful it doesn't get too light, I think it is a little aging because it washes me out after a certain point. It is a common hairdresser myth that light hair makes you look younger though.

Absolutely this. It’s mad that at 30 you need to look younger, and you don’t even need to swallow the idea that looking older is bad.

DdyDaisyDaresYou · 02/02/2024 08:17

Change your hairdresser .

A good hair dresser will support your priority of improving the health of hair and from their perspective its about long term client relationships & helping them to achieve tip top hair condition.

Once you've done this, ypu can decide what you want to do next with your hair - if anything at all.

Copen · 02/02/2024 08:32

Just grow it out and see how you like it.

I have mousy hair and went natural for about 5 years. My hair is very fine so it was almost in too good condition and looked very limp. I've gone back to a few highlights - it makes it looks thicker and I just prefer the colour.

Alwaystired2023 · 02/02/2024 08:34

Agree with majority here, I like mousy brown / blonde hair! And think it looks young because it's natural

Lol at your hairdresser letting you know her thoughts on how old you look though 🤣
