Passport questions- knowledge appreciated!

I want to apply for a UK passport for me and my kids but I can't figure out what I need to do without starting the application because it's not clear. I had a child passport which was used often as my parents took me abroad regularly when I was a kid, I don't know if I had an adult one as the last time I travelled abroad I was 17 but I vaguely remember it had expired under a 10 year rule previous to that and I think it had been renewed, but assuming that was a child passport I can't find any information on applying for an adult passport 20 years later, not having the original and having had a change of surname from marriage. My mum would know but she passed away and dad isn't much help. I think my mum sorted me having an adult passport that I just never used but I don't know if that's right and if it was it'd be long expired by now. I remember having one that expired but don't know if it was a child one. Either way, I can only find info on never having had one or upgrading current child passport, not on having had one I don't know the number of and not knowing if I had an adult one! Any advice appreciated!

Apply for a replacement passport. You had one and you no longer have it. Adult or child is irrelevant, unless your last passport was issued before 01/01/94. Go on gov.uk (no other site!) and search for "passport" for information. When sending your documents for name change & your photos include a letter stating that you did have a passport but it is long since lost etc.

It's a really common scenario and it basically comes down to clear communication with the examiner. Put a supporting letter in with the rest of your documents and always include your application number on everything. Apply early as you need to allow time for a countersignatory etc.

I agree with the PPs, apply early and for a replacement passport as you had one previously. All the specifications and everything could be found on official government websites, and if you choose to take a photo yourself, you can use one of those programs that have templates following the UK passport photo requirements (like Passport photo maker or others).

I've just done this! It's been about 20 years since I had a passport and have no idea where it is so I went through the application of a replacement, sent my marriage certificate off and the other day I got an email saying they couldn't find me with the information they had and provided a link to say I'd lost my passport. I filled that in and got a phone call about 10 minutes later to say it was all done and cancelled and I would get a reference number, when I get the reference number I need to phone the number in the email and give them it and then it will all go through. I did that and got an email today to say its all been accepted and my passport is being printed and will be with me soon so don't worry its fairly straightforward and all the emails are really clear about what to do
