Can I just shamelessly boast and gloat and bask in my own amazingness for a minute?

I didn't work for almost 8 years when my DC were little (apart from weekend pub work etc). Had no career to abandon in the first place (v good A Levels but dropped out of uni for various reasons) and then DH (now ex) earned enough to make it doable (Looking back I was an idiot to leave myself vulnerable being unmarried etc but thankfully I ended up being one of the lucky ones whose ex didn't try to shaft them).

When youngest DC started school in Sep 2018 I started applying for NHS admin/reception jobs as had always fancied a career in NHS. Got hired as a receptionist and quickly moved upwards through various roles in the surgery.

I've just been successful at interview for the role of Assistant Practice Manager 😲🤗.

I am so bloody proud of myself after a lifetime of failing to live up to my potential (and being reminded of it every turn by my mother 🙄).

It's SO monumentally huge for me and my DC.

Well done, lovely thread to see. Bask, strut, do that blowing your nails and polishing them on your collarbone thing and even do a little dance if you like.

Love to hear this.
Congrats. Amazing start to your year.
Celebrate with the kids.

That's not boasting or gloating, that's glorying in your well deserved success. Bask away!

You’re an inspiration, OP! It’s so easy to start believing you can never amount to anything, when that’s simply never true. You believed in yourself, you worked hard and you can now look back at how far you’ve come. Wonderful.

chipshopElvis · 31/01/2024 21:08

Well done OP, that really made me smile!

iammother · 31/01/2024 21:13

Incredible news! You star! Shine and enjoy.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/01/2024 21:16

Very well done, OP! I'm another one who didn't achieve their potential when I was younger then life got in the way, although I did do a degree (which wasn't really worth anything). You did the right thing going into NHS admin, it seems there's more opportunity to progress. I went into admin within education, doing various things from educational libraries to school office admin (where I am currently). Very little opportunity for progression (unless it's HE, which may be SLIGHTLY easier).

I'd be embarrassed to go back to a school reunion now as I was one of the supposed high fliers when I was 16. I don't know what happened. So well done to you!!!

DolphinsAreEvil · 31/01/2024 21:18

SilkyMoonfaceSaucepanMan · 31/01/2024 21:49

Well done! You know, this has made me really happy reading this. There’s some crap going on in my life that is making me feel that good things don’t happen and I really needed to hear about something great happening as a result of hard work. So thank you. And HUGE congrats! 😍😍

GingerScallop · 31/01/2024 21:56

Lift one arm up. Bend it at the elbow just behind your ear. Pat yourself on your back and say well done smuggy!

Congratulations and all the best to you and your daughter

Congratulations OP, that's some achievement. My DD has just started with the NHS as admin support and wants to progress as quickly as she can. Good to hear success stories like yours.
